Willard did the right thing by benching Desi for a half.

If he sits Desi against Nova, Willard would be WRONG. What kid wants to come out of a game. If he cursed or used inappropriate language than a half is sufficient. Willard should NOT let his ego affect this decision.

Reading Willard's quotes, I really have to wonder what he said - going to trust Big Willie on this one unless we find out and it wasn't bad - assuming it was, really hope Desi is contrite and makes amends - stop the sulking at one half - may take his teammates telling him how much they need him to keep the strong start going

You can't say he should play against Villanova unless you know exactly what was said or if Desi has been warned before.

You don't know the entire situation with Desi. If Willard sits him vs. Npva then Desi brought on himself. Willard gets blamed for not using discipline last year and it was his fault that the team had bad chemistry. Now when he does discipline the player to avoid the same problems it's Willard's Fault, enough already put the effing blame where it belongs!!! This is an ongoing problem with Desi, he doesn't know when to keep his mouth shut.

If he sits Desi it would not be wrong. We have no clue what was said and it is an ongoing issue. Apparently it may have been according to sal

willard barely used discipline for 5 seasons, outside of pope missing uconn and then jackson and lawrence being dismissed

Another KW quote: "Either he'll learn his lesson or he won't"

Yikes. Doesn't sound good. Sounds like an ongoing issue. Would think IW might have some influence over him but doesn't appear to be the case.

The Team will rally around Coach Willard as he develops and leads his Team ... note it!

He cursed. One half is sufficient. I don't care if he cursed 100 times. One half is sufficient!

So what is your point?

He's killed for not having discipline for 5 years and when he makes a change to hold players accountable he's killed for that.

Did he curse at someone? Was it an assistant coach, a teammate , an opposing player, a ref, a fan etc , so before any judgements are made lets get the facts. While I'm reserving judgement on this incident until all the facts are in , it is troublesome because while the players have changed over the past six years there has been one constant and that's the head coach.

i am not killing him, he has to use his discretion; if desi used foul language in a poor way then the message was sent, if there has been past episodes of this and willard had done nothing, shame on him

Didn't I read a story about Desi recently about how happy he is here, how tight everyone is , how everyone is on the same page , et al so what the hell happened.

Willard has done it before... How many times this year have you questioned why Desi was sitting??? It's an ongoing problem with him so mabe now the punishment needs to be harsh for him to get he message. Desi's mouth keeps getting him in trouble.

I saw the exchange. Kevin pulled Desi ostensibly due to a lack of defensive intensity. Desi said something to KW who responded and Desi followed up with something that was clearly offensive to KW who then glared at Desi for 60 seconds. Desi sat the balance of the game.

Carino: "My sense after working the locker room: The players have Willard's back on this one, 100 percent. Story coming."

Not only the players - WE do too.

This is another demonstration of maturity. Things are never sweet light and cakes in any season for any team. But handling things strongly is always for the good.

This has nothing to do with Willard and Singh. This is all about Desi's mouth. I applaud the coach.

What effect does it have long term? We'll see. Hopefully nothing more than a younger player who need to mature. And if it is something more than that, then we don't need that kind of nonsense.

The same variety of bovine scatology that invariably appears during the first half of every season. I can't believe writers still get conned into this. Once the calendar changes and the conference schedule starts, things get real - whatever "real" is will always emerge.

It is a joke to say Willard went easy on the players in previous years. We had players suspended prior to big games for the first 4 years.
We really need Desi to respond to this issue like a pro would, and not like most late teen boys would.

Maybe I'm old fashioned, and I'm definitely in the minority, but I hope the story doesn't come out. It's clear Willard is in charge. Let this stay inside the locker room. It's a learning experience. It doesn't need to be out in the public. Anyone who has played team sports knows there are things that should stay inside. This is one of them.

Agreed 100%. Willard too has gone too far in the past with his descriptions of what goes on behind the scenes.

My sense after working the locker room: The players have Willard's back on this one, 100 percent.

Willard unsure if Desi will play at Villanova. “No players talk like that, not in this world. Either he’ll learn his lesson or he won't.”

Willard said Desi disagreed with his decision to pull him out late in the 1st. “He said some things my players just don’t say.” Good for KW

I love the way Desi plays and I recognize his basketball skills and importance to our team. Desi has to learn the important word is "team" and that no player is bigger than the team, we win as a team and we lose as a team.

I am taking a positive approach regarding this unfortunate but necessary dynamic as a part of the process of the advancement and maturity of this team.Desi should take a lesson from Whitehead, when he was pulled from a game, he walks to the bench; he keeps his mouth shut; and he just goes to his seat, then cheers for his teammates. This exhibits maturity, leadership qualities, etc.

Let's just hope Desi learned the lesson, keeps his mouth shut and plays well. I also agree whitehead should show he is a leader here and tell his friend to cut the crap.

Article doesn't load for me, says my "complementary access" has ended. Anyone have the quotes?

Edit: Never mind, I was able to access the article through Jerry's twitter link. Telling quotes indeed. KW handled this well.

“It’s a wakeup call,” postgrad guard Derrick Gordon said. “I’ve been through that. know what it feels like when you get caught up in that moment and you’re talking back to the coach. I’m sure he apologized to Coach Willard for doing that.”

“He’s still young. I’ll have to tell him, there’s a lot of basketball left to play,” Gordon said. “You’ve got to be able to use it, take it for what it’s worth, and get better.”

----------------------------------------------------

“I really don’t know what happened. If he said some things that he wasn’t supposed to, coach handled it well,” Whitehead said. “We really don’t tolerate talking aback to Coach and we all know that. I bet if you asked Desi, he would say he was wrong. If Coach said he belonged on the bench, then he belonged on the bench.”

-----------------------------------------------------

“It shows that nobody is invincible,” said sophomore forward Ish Sanogo, who chipped in 10 points and five rebounds. “No matter who you are, if you don’t come with your A game, you could get sat.”

“The thing that’s changed (this season) is we hold each other accountable,” ‘Sanogo said. “That wasn’t going on last year.”
