Willard

The infatuation with KW amazes me. 😵‍💫
After wobbling at first, he has steadied Maryland in a tough P5 conference. Team overachieved this year and is a four seed. Had a very very good class this year; he knows the Big East and apparently pay for play. Despite naysayers, he is a top 20 coach in the country, and the top ten or twelve are not going anywhere.

Simply needs to fix that 2-6 NCAAT record and never getting out of the 2nd Round to be considered so high IMO.

There are countless examples of guys who “finally” breakthrough in postseason play. He will, he’s a good coach and at a program with resources to do so.

Willard to Villanova seems to be the hot story tonight between Trilly Donovan and folks who seem to be pretty dialed in on the Villanova & MD message boards 😳

guys, no bb coach at a power fb program is going to a bb only if he can help it
Why not? The path to success is much easier at Villanova and the 10 team Big East where only a few have legit NIL chests than it is in the 18? Team Big Ten with a whole bunch of schools with truly endless pockets.

Will see how Maryland looks on Friday. Will he looked checked out? Could history repeat, does he endorse Tony Skinn to take Maryland job on his way out?

Not playing in an NCAA tournament game in 3 years and the year we just had, makes having a coach looked checked out in the NCAA tournament to be a giant step in the right direction.

Really? Willard would leave his situation at Maryland for Nova? That sounds kinda crazy.

What’s the buyout for him there?

Between the Neptune buyout and a Willard buyout plus contract, that is a good chunk of change.

Like Fishjam said the travel can’t be enjoyable and if the money and NIL are comparable plus out of the big state schools?

This guy gives nice chunk of money to their program so decent source but don’t know who is telling him this. With all the other info it’s clear this is serious

I’m not doubting the source of validity. I’m just really surprised is all with the amount of money involved.

I also have to think if Maryland has any sort of run, they’re going to counter a Nova offer with a substantial amount of money.

But maybe that’s Willard’s angle with showing interest in Nova.

maybe the sec dominance is the shape of things to come.

Was hoping Nova would screw this up, but that's one more team that climbing over just became more of a challenge. Not sure many conferences will have tree like Sha who coached under Willard who coached under Pitino.

Hope that does us some good.... soon.

If Maryland loses by 27 tonight and is non competitive, we will know...lol
If the players on Maryland don't show up it's on them. 20 years from now no one is going to be happy saying I didn't show up because my coach was going elsewhere. No competitor is saying I was ok not giving my best. It's the dumbest logic I ever heard. They have a chance to do great things. Heck some of them may want to make a good impression to go to Villanova next year. LOL Seriously Derik Queen and Julian Reese have a chance to raise their stock for the future. If Kevin going to Villanova is a good reason for them to not look to raise their stock, they're nuts.

Can anyone ever imagine MIchael Jordan saying I would have been ok with losing because Phil was looking for another job. If the team gets blown out, it says just as much about the players.

Not my point at all.....it is about preparation from the coaching staff, coaching during the game etc. If you are worried about a potential job change, you cannot give 100% to preparing your team.

Our guys were not ready for TCU. We made no adjustments, and Willard coached like he was taking a new job.

I think this is true too. It's one of those scenarios in which 2 things can be true at one time. If a coach has a foot out the door, can a team still perform? Absolutely. As pointed out, the players have every reason to for a million reasons. Sha was out the door at SPU and those kids still played their a&& off. But, to PR's point, a coach that is already out the door can have a negative effect on a team for a given game, especially during those parts of every game where there is adversity and things start to go bad.

If it’s all about preparation 15s beating 2s would happen constantly. You’ve played together for 5 months at this point. You’re not installing major changes to the office and defense. Sha’s team knew he was gone. They played well. This isn’t the first time a coach was moving on and people knew it. We were in foul trouble from the get go. TCU out toughed us the whole game. It wasn’t like they played beautiful basketball to beat us. They went beast mode on us, bullied us and we didn’t match their intensity or heart. If matching intensity and heart isn’t a matter of personal pride of each player I don’t know what to tell you.

For those who know Curry know.

I also think it explains some of Willard’s comments lately about aligned to Evans. I guess we’ll see.

Amazing that a guy who has had almost zero success in the tournament can climb his way to one of the most coveted jobs in the sport. That’s not a dig at Willard btw.

It’s an imperfect science with these human beings.

I tend to agree overall, especially in mismatches like Maryland has with GCU. But it also does happen where situations occur and players get emotional, feel let down, feel screwed over, all kinds of stuff happens and they don’t play their best, they take their foot off the preparation and lose that extra edge. And players in the youth and college ranks are way more to deal with than they used to be in this regard IMO.

Few if any P4 coach is leaving for Nova other than a coach who gets canned. Collins maybe since their football is lousy. He’s a good coach but tough to win there. But whatever happens with realignment you’d rather be a hoops coach in the B1G than the BE. And I love the BE. Just the way it is.
The Big East wins National Championships. The little 10 beats Rutgers.
