Willard

Hear you and agree. But there was stuff like “Sha worked Toumi out and couldn’t believe what he saw” (in a good way, hence the Baby Mamu stuff) or “Sha thinks based on summer workouts and practice this team will be better than last year” etc
Well I’ll say this. If you have inferior talent practicing against inferior talent then it might look good until they go up against better players.

Hence why I don’t take any of the over the summer hype stuff serious anymore.

Yeah, there's always going to be good stuff being leaked but I knew what I needed about the summer from the following red flags. Many key players not reporting until late in Summer. Constantly seeing/hearing that key players are not practicing. Sha prohibiting anyone from coming to practice that extended almost until season began - even positive writers like Rothstein and Jerry.

many here tell me SMU is money central...their athletics program has been largely irrelevant since the death penalty. football has one aac title and I think two shares in cusa for division.

No one here has disputed their irrelevancy in an entirely different era. If anything SMU showed you decades ago they were ready to play the game. As mentioned above, they have oil money and they want to make up for lost time. They also made the ACC championship and CFB playoff in football and went 24-10 this year in the ACC. War chest and willingness - SMU will be good in football and basketball moving forward.

The last sentence was a definite red flag, but when that got mentioned here, anyone who said that got scoffed at for thinking they know more than Sha or told "this is exactly how Sha likes it" etc etc

I think the responses are usually pretty varied. I remember there were plenty of people saying trust Sha but others were critical of Sha's secrecy and I for one thought the reason was he wasn't happy with the play of the team. I'm not great with the Search function on this site but check the Trove "Some News" on October 4th. I'd paste it here but off-topic and don't want to derail Slick Willy's thread. :)

He blocked me from going to a practice. More importantly he blocked Jerry and Rothstein.

In fact almost no one saw a practice all fall until Jerry saw one the day before our first game. That was a joke and the beginning of Seton Hall Pirate Paranoia (God rest coach Thompson's soul).

And of course there was no Blue/White scrimmage this year due to the date of Seton Hall's homecoming weekend.

Just an absolute mess in this day and age of new rosters every year. No one ever got to know the new players personally as the media had nothing to write about in the preseason.

Media did have much to write about during the season either. 😂

Sounds to me like Willard doesn’t like the way his contract renegotiation is going so he’s speaking out publicly. Very well could backfire on him but he seems much more confident now.

On another note, Fordham fired their coach yesterday. Wonder if Neptune returns. I know many of their die hard fans were not happy the way he left for Nova.

I’ve gotta believe Jay Wright has a big say here. My opinion is listen to him over what any of us say on this board. I guarantee if Jay said no to Kevin when asked kevin wouldn’t even be considered
Willard ia a great choice for Nova

I also don't think he is negotiating for a pay raise. I think he is negotiating for basketball program commitment. He knows what Nova has
Willard is NOT in the VU list. And there are more than several name

Nova calls and says do you want to replace Jay Wright. No one including any Fordham fam would say, no I'm good at Rose Hill.

I don't think Willard is negotiating his salary. He wants program commitments. But without an AD in place, cannot see how he does not jump for Nova.

This is the logical thought process. He refuses to say he’s not going anywhere. Which means he is. Perhaps a super deep run gets them to commit to his demands out of fear of major backlash. Like if they beat Florida in S16 MD fans lose their minds if he walks.

You dont think another rising AD or even one from another P4 will come to Maryland and all will be well? The current AD who is perhaps bound for the texas oil money at SMU doesn't come without warts from time at UGA

Willard has an opportunity in this Tourney with his Maryland team. Hopefully for his team’s sake he and they can stay focused. His starting 5 are as solid as any team right now in the tourney. Queen is a special talent. Will be interesting to see how things play out over the next couple of weeks.

Willard throwing it all out there. He left for Maryland thinking he’d have it easy with the resources…

Point blank he just wanted a path to more significant income because if not now then when? These contracts are created by agents and really have good security checks in place even if failure becomes the actual reality

Impressive that his team didn’t look like a shell of itself with all the rumors
I think with players getting paid now and the transfer portal always there for them, these are different discussions between coach and players. Yeah, I may not be here next year, but if we all play well now and win now, everyone will have opportunities no matter what. There is no BS in that message.

Another coach was referring to this as well in one of the pressers… that only as recently as two years ago when the players were stuck and would have to sit out a year it was a totally different message and there was more emotion. Now everyone just out there getting theirs.

The NCAA tournament has always been a stage for players to improve their stock. It may not have paid dividends immediately, but players have made a name for themselves. What athlete in his right mind is ok with no showing with the world watching? It's the dumbest thing in my mind to say the players didn't show up because the coach checked out. I'm going to let my opportunity to make a big name for myself because someone else is checked out. Brilliant.

I think it matters

I like KW a lot and the TCU situation was a definite dark mark on his run

Not the end of the world but that was bad

You’ve prob never been on a real team trying to achieve something

You talk like it’s a literal switch these athletes just turn on and off to decide to dominate

No regard for the journey or thinking they are doing something and worked for a season as a unit to accomplish something…than one person is out it’s deflating

also the prep: the margin of difference between the talent is usually thin…if one group is locked in and prepared as a unit it helps immensely

I liked KW a lot but his lack of focus on TCU was a black eye on his tenure and obviously impacted that team and game a lot
LMAO. I'll bet my athletic career took me further than most on this board, but it's not worth debating on a message board as it led me to a 9-5 job any way. I'm not into talking about Glory Days.

Is it a switch? I'm sorry if you hate losing, you all of a sudden don't find it acceptable.

One person is out and it's deflating? Or the thousands of stories out there where a guy goes out and everyone rallies together.

The team played horribly in the big east tournament. We barely won a 6-11 game vs win less Georgetown. Harris hit a big 3 with less than a minute to win that game. We got taken care of by UConn easily. Kadary's hand injury was a big deal. It's amazing how people forget that.

Willard is just another in a long line of ahole college coaches.
Not judging him as a human, but for the last decade he gets the job done. If we're looking for a saint on our sidelines, this year was just the tip of the iceberg.

Not personally but how they act like they are some sort of untouchable king.

And yes, Sha certainly acted like that this past season.

I just want to be competitive in the big picture. I've come to the realization there's a 99% chance no matter who our coach is I'm not looking to have a beer with him. Just give us a chance in the tournament year in, year out.

Sha's acted that way since he got here with no hometown discount. Honestly it doesn't bother me for the reason I stated above. I have no desire to grab a beer with the guy. NCAA tournaments are all that matter to me. If you get there that means you had a damn good year. To me that's where the bar for Seton Hall is. When we get big donors we can talk Sweet 16's and Final 4's as the bar. But get to the tournament.

The TCU situation made me feel bad not for our fans but for the seniors on that team. Guys like Rhoden, Cale, and Ike who helped make KW. They didn’t deserve to have their careers end like that.

That team was actually loaded with talent and had a fairly easy draw with Arizona as the #1 seed in that region. Could’ve made a run if they were locked in.
