Willard

How do you figure? If tht shot missed, the ONLY thing being said about Maryland and moreso Willard for the entire offseason and next regular season is tht he can’t win in the tournament. It would have been hard to refute the evidence.

Now he’s one win away from the elite 8 and everybody forgetting his past…
If he lost, he would just be at Nova this week rather than next.

Isn’t that how it works. This isn’t the first March buzzer beater to change perceptions. Duke of the early 90s wouldn’t be what they’re considered today if Laetner misses. If the kid from CSU missed the 3, you’d be saying if it wasn’t for the missed 3 Willard wouldn’t be going on. If Kentucky scores on the final possession of regulation Sha goes home round 1, not the elite 8. You could do that for tons of coaches in this one and done format.

Could have been a travel...he is still in drama with the school and no AD...next has florida...he better get some game tape in on the flight back...i can already see the excuse we had to fly out west twice in two weeks
They should just stay. They play on Thursday. are they going to get home Monday at 6am and leave Tuesday afternoon for Wednesday practice?

That was a great set getting his best player the ball in the middle of the court. Queen still had to make the shot but he got the ball with space.

Reminds me of the last time Willard called a TO with about 3.5 seconds left to set up a play to get his best player the ball. Sterling Gibbs gets the ball in the middle of the court and buries the 15 footer to beat NOVA in the 2014 BET.

Then there was the set to get Whitehead a mismatch against Ochefu with under 30 seconds at the 2016 BET.

And then the Mamu out of bounds winner vs Butler with .06 on the clock.

Just a few I can recall. Maybe that guy can coach.

Anyone hear Willard’s postgame?

Said he wished he had gotten to his first S16 at Seton Hall.
Honestly I don’t understand the vitriol for some players and coaches who leave us.

News flash: no coach will begin and end their career here.

Willard always speaks highly of his Hall days, Kadary lamented the fact that they were facing us to clinch the conference title…

“Leaving” is almost always messy…there are hurt feelings.

But, at some point, it’s time to get over it and move on…while also acknowledging what the prior player/coach had contributed to the Hall, and to be grateful for that.

I always root for Big East teams in the tourney…that’s done…lol, but I’m still rooting for Maryland.

And…watching closely how we do once the portal opens tomorrow.

It’s always, Let’s go Pirates!!

For the life of me I do not understand how Derik Queen is not the second pick in this draft. If he’s on Rutgers instead of Ace, they are in the NCAA tournament this year. Beast.
I would be thrilled if the Nets could get him art 4 or 5

His 3 point shot isn’t as good. The NBA is ridiculous when it comes to evaluating players. It’s more about potential than who’s better. They think the other guys have more potential. No doubt in my mind you’re right he should be second pick but I know he won’t.

Nova hit a buzzer beater to win a national championship. Jay Wright got lucky!!

Willard is a good coach, a winning coach, and his players love playing for him. But hey, if and when they lose to Florida on Thursday, you can tell all your friends that Willard never made it as far as Sha. So at least you have that going for you. Unless of course he wins on Thursday. Then you got nothing!

Those couple guys already have nothing going for them.

Willard made a lot of $ tonight no matter what. A lot of pressure on Maryland to get a deal done.

Sha went to he elite 8 elsewhere. Willard’s in the S16 elsewhere. Looking forward to talking about someone leading SHU there
It’s been a quarter of a century since we’ve been to the Sweet 16. Right now, I just hope we can get good enough again to make the Tourney.

It was a travel as Queen took 3 large steps. Undisputable.

What are you talking about. You think if Willard lost last night that the entire narrative wouldn’t be him failing to reach the 2nd weekend for his entire career with lots of solid to very good teams.

that was Jay Wrights narrative forever, it’s all you heard year after year. One shot changes it all fair or not

Q. I know you mentioned you want these moments to be about the players, but for you getting to your first second weekend as a coach what's that feeling like?

KEVIN WILLARD: Yeah, I mean, it's nice. I'm not going to lie. I would much rather be coaching than being back home. I wish my first weekend would have been at Seton Hall, to be honest with you. Seton Hall was really good to me and I thought we had some chances. It's hard, to be honest with you. I know it's always been on my back and it's always been a stigma, but I knew I had confidence in myself that eventually if you keep getting to this tournament, which my teams keep getting to this tournament, that I was eventually going to knock the door down.

I wish I would have done it at Seton Hall, to be honest with you, first. It's a place I loved and still love and they were so good to me. I wish I would have been able to do it there. But I'm glad that -- this is only our second Sweet 16 in 23 years here, so I'm just as happy that it happened at Maryland.

But he didn’t lose last night. As a matter of fact, he won. So you’re gonna stick to the “luck” narrative? Whatever helps you sleep well at night.

We were in a good place with Willard. I’m hoping we can return to that good place very soon but my hopes aren’t exactly very high for obvious reasons.

I have no vitriol for any coach or players that leave our program. I even sometimes root for them under the right circumstances. If they transfer to another school in our conference however, I will root against them every time. Even if they play Duke.

Spot on.

Regardless of what he does elsewhere, never makes another tournament again or wins it all, he did the 2nd best job here of anyone we hired in the last 70 years. I don't understand why people want to tear him down, it's almost as if they want to forget the 2nd best run of basketball of the last 70 years.

Dynamite reply, I especially like the part where you explained your reasons for such a thought.
Man, what are you going to do with yourself now that you don’t have Willard to kick around anymore. I’ve posted many times my thoughts on Willard over the years. My point of view has always been that he was under appreciated at SHU despite some failings. You have been a monotonous one trick pony regarding Willard.

You really don’t understand my post.. it wasn’t complicated. It was what would have been his national perception. Not my personal opinions.

Secondly I strongly supported Willard here during and after his left. Go back and look, I told you all it was a glory run and that he needed to be appreciated.

Keep trying
