Hobbs mess

One thing I always wondered is why Hobbs was not made permanent AD if he always wanted to be involved in athletics, or appointed to the Presidency, despite his credentials and his successful tenure at the law school. It was as if SHU just let him walk to RU, which I thought was odd at the time.

Given what’s come out over the last few months, I think I now understand why neither happened.

Does Sha Know What He’s Doing?

Being bad and being disappointed are 2 completely different things. I have absolutely no positive expectations this year. Tough to be disappointed this year. Last year was much more disappointing because you felt we could beat Iowa, RU, USC. For as bad as this team is, we might have fewer 15 point losses this year. We had 7 last year and only 2 so far this year. Being beaten by 15+ that many times with a much better team is and was disappointing.
Of course being snubbed for the NCAAT was disappointing but it was not a disappointing season by any objective standards. The problem with you negative guys is that you rarely acknowledge the positives. Yeah we had upper classmen of whom the vast majority of BE coaches thought were no good. They turn it around, finish in 4th place with 13 BE wins including over NC UCONN and S16 Marquette, beat SJ 2/3 and our nemesis VU. Rack up 25 wins and a (so what) NIT banner. But rarely a mention of the accomplishments just always the same old stuff. This season is way past disappointing. It’s reached the apathetic stage.

NOTES YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Old rivals reunite at Prudential Center on Saturday night as the Seton Hall men's basketball team welcomes St. John's to Newark for an 8 p.m. contest on FS1.
  • The Pirates suffered their sixth single-digit loss of the season on Wednesday at Butler.
  • The Hall's offense has been clicking as of late averaging 82.3 points per game, shooting 49 percent from the floor, 45 percent from three and 75 percent from the free throw line over the last three games.
  • Seton Hall trails the all-time series with St. John's, 50-63, but the Pirates lead the all-time series in BIG EAST regular season games, 40-36.
  • The Pirates have won six of the last eight meetings against the Red Storm and they've won the last seven meetings at Prudential Center.
  • Seton Hall is 12-1 all-time against St. John's at Prudential Center.
  • Located in the Jamaica section of Queens, N.Y., St. John's is a stones throw away from where Seton Hall head coach Shaheen Holloway grew up South Jamaica.
  • Holloway is 2-3 in his career against Rick Pitino; three meetings last season and two meetings when they were at Saint Peter's and Iona, respectively.
  • Seton Hall is 2-0 in overtime games this season and Holloway's career record in overtime games is 9-3, including a 3-1 mark as head coach of the Pirates.
  • Super sophomore Isaiah Coleman was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the second time this season on Monday after averaging 25.0 points, 5.0 assists and 3.5 assists in two games last week for the Pirates.
  • Coleman is off to a scorching start in conference play where he trails only Villanova's Eric Dixon averaging 21.2 points per game.
  • Coleman also ranks 13th in the conference averaging 5.8 rebounds per game and second averaging 3.0 offensive boards per contest..
  • Coleman is one of only four Pirates since 1988 to score at least 15 points in the first five BIG EAST games of the season joining Mark Bryant (1987-88), Terry Dehere (1992-93) and Myles Powell (2019-20).
  • Coleman has scored in double-figures in nine of his last 10 games and four of those outputs were 20-point performances against BIG EAST teams.
  • Prior to missing Wednesday's game at Butler with a foot injury, Dylan Addae-Wusu scored 24 points and dished out seven assists, both personal bests in his Seton Hall career, against DePaul.
  • Addae-Wusu is two assists away from 400 career assists and went over 200 career steals at Providence.
  • Addae-Wusu trails only Creighton's Ryan Kalkbrenner for the most career BIG EAST games played among active players with 83.
  • After struggling from the free throw line through the first month of the season, Seton Hall has bounced back since the start of conference play shooting 76 percent (100-of-132) from the stripe, good enough for fifth in the BIG EAST.
  • Seton Hall ranks third in the BIG EAST in bench scoring averaging 23.1 points per game.
  • Despite not defending at the level that they were at the beginning of the season, the Pirates still rank fourth in the BIG EAST and 74th in Div. 1 in scoring defense (67.5 ppg).
  • Seton Hall ranks 14th in Div. I in non-steal turnover percentage by KenPom.

St Johns likely no Smith tomorrow

This morning's paper has St. John's as a 10.5 pick. Even at the Rock that looks like a safe bet.
So if he is out it hurts the SJU cause. They don't have too much depth. Pitino is going to press the hell out of us and Sha should return the favor. If Seton Hall could get any starter-for SJU in foul trouble it be a tremendous benefit. I just don't see a blowout by SJU. The uniform counts and as we often see in Hall/Rutgers games. SHU needs the "Gus" energy tonight. Play with some attitude.
