Isaiah Coleman retains agency for NIL Representation

The optics of once again losing our best player aren't good, but i dont want to be forced into keeping him as our top guy just because it looks bad. You can still send a message that you are serious about playing big time ball without trying to build a team around a guy (and paying him as such) that just doesn't seem suited to it (to me at least).
That’s only one reason to keep him. Again, portal players are inherently more risky. Look at AJ Storr. Crushed and Wiscy, sucks at Kansas. Myles Rice crushed at Wazzu, sucks at Indy. Maheney crushed at SMC, sucks at UConn. There’s dozens of more examples.

Coleman is a known commodity at SHU. That’s worth a lot to a budget constrained school that cannot afford to miss on their big spends.

Regardless of how you rate Coleman, bringing him back is an absolute must. For starters, he’s the bird in hand. We know for certain that he’s at worst a top 15 returning BE player who can excel under Shaheen. He has upside for more, but that’s his floor. We won’t find that level of certainty in the portal. He’s also someone the fans have developed an attachment to. He’s someone to root for.

Second, the school really needs to send a message that they are serious about playing big time basketball. They've failed miserably on that front two years in a row, to the point of being publicly mocked by the national media. If it happens again (and losing Coleman would be a terrible start), the Pru will be a ghost town next year. The fans will not stick around if they think it’s hopeless.

No Reason to Overpay for Isaiah

Don’t fall into the trap of counting the school’s money for them. They’ve skimped on players two years in a row. They need to invest in next year’s team. A top 10-15 returning BE player is going to be costly on the open market. Coleman is not a perfect player, but he’s only a soph and has a high floor and high ceiling. He’s also a homegrown player and not some mercenary. They need to get this one done.

This is where I'm at with IC. He is a very good second or third option. He absolutely cant be our best (highest paid) player.
Since there is now a dollar sign on each of these guys we need to look at comparisons just like real estate..
Let's take st johns. Where would Coleman fall if he was currently on st johns?
My guess is 7th man.
What's the 7th man get on st johns?

I couldn't agree with this more.

At Seton Hall we need 1 Myles Powell, Kadary Richmond or Whitehead type. I don't know what the funds will allow but if it allows I'd rather spend $1 million on a player who can absolutely take over the game than 500K on 2 good players.

Pirates Stifled in Late-Night Clash Against No. 16 Marquette

MILWAUKEE, Wis. — In a late-night BIG EAST clash, the Seton Hall men's basketball team fell to No. 16 Marquette, 80-56.

The Golden Eagles (20-6, 11-4 BIG EAST) shot 40.7% from beyond the arc with three double-digit scorers, while the Pirates (7-19, 2-13 BIG EAST) had one player in double digits, in addition to shooting 25.0% from three.

How It Happened
After a scoreless first minute in Milwaukee, Isaiah Coleman drew first blood for the Pirates from three, putting The Hall up 3-0. Marquette responded with their own three-pointer the next possession and the two sides began trading blows. A Prince Aligbe jumper would help the Pirates go in front 7-5 with 16:41 remaining in the half, but the Golden Eagles once again responded to tie things up at 7-7.

In the aftermath of this BIG EAST tussle's early volleys, Marquette went on a 7-to-0 run to jump out in front 14-7 as the clock hit 13 minutes remaining. As the momentum shifted to the Golden Eagles, Scotty Middleton and Dylan Addae-Wusu fought to wrangle momentum back to the Pirates. Despite a layup from Coleman as the buzzer expired in the first half, Seton Hall entered the break down 17, 40-23.

The Pirates' offense remained stuck in neutral during opening minutes of the second half, but Addae-Wusu eventually broke through to get the Pirates on the board. Middleton, Coleman and Gus Yalden would add to the Pirates' offensive tally in the second half, but the nationally-ranked Golden Eagles proved to be too much for The Hall on the night. By the time the final buzzer sounded, Marquette outscored Seton Hall in the second half 40-to-33, ending the game in a 80-56 Pirates loss.

  • This is the 30th meeting between the two BIG EAST institutions.
  • With the loss, the Pirates move to 14-26 all-time against the Golden Eagles.

Coleman has some talent but he really stands out as a decent player on a very bad team, which overrates his value. He's worth trying to keep, but not worth bending over backwards for.

Seeing this news, he's likely good as gone. His scummy agent will drive the bidding.

Your missing the point. Pitino wanted Zuby and Wilcher back even though they played lesser roles on last year's team.

It is not apples to apples comparison with this years Seton Hall roster. Pitino wanted them back not just for continuity purposes but because they were Top 40 recruits who originally picked UNC and Kansas.

They were making big money last year and were going to be big parts of this year’s team regardless of their roles last year once Soriano and Jenkins left. He is not keeping guys around who can’t play just for continuity.

It is similar to what he is doing with the two euro kids (Prey and Lutopolis) this year. They and Glover will be big contributors next year. Take massive jumps in production.

On the 2nd episode of Vice documentary last night it is quite clear it takes a certain player to play for Pitino no matter what the dollars are.

Cooley, btw, is apparently a mentor to Sha. Dan posted here a while back that Cooley was someone Sha spoke with often when he took the job, as EC makes it a point to support young AA head coaches.

And Pitino has done nothing but publicly try to help Sha so everyone thinks this disaster of a year doesn’t fall on him or hurt his reputation.

He’s always been like a brother of mine, somebody who I cheer for all the time,” Providence coach Ed Cooley said. “I check in on him and talk to him about just his headspace. There’s only so much headspace we have up there and it could be occupied when you take over a program like Seton Hall, who’s gonna have high expectations. They expect to be a Big East champion and a national champion.”

Marquette Sweeps Season Series Over Seton Hall

By Colin Rajala

Nationally ranked Marquette (20-6, 11-4) handled Seton Hall (7-19,2-13) in a 17-point road win last month at the Prudential Center and Tuesday evening’s matchup at the Fiserv Forum was not much different as the Golden Eagles cruised to a 80-56 victory with their offense and defense being entirely too much for the Pirates to handle.

Marquette entered the game losers of three of their last four games, but held Seton Hall scoreless for two extended periods in the first half to build a double-digit halftime lead before opening the second half on a 10-3 run to blow the game wide open.

The Golden Eagles were led by Kam Jones, who recorded a game high 14 points, including seven of the team’s first nine points and 12 before halftime, to go along with five assists, four rebounds and a steal, while Chase Ross tallied 11 points, five assists, two rebounds, two steals and a block and Ben Gold recorded 10 points and six rebounds.

Eleven Marquette players scored in the game, seven of which made a shot from long distance, as the 16th-ranked team in the country saw its bench score 36 points. Not to be outdone by the offense, Marquette’s defense outrebounded Seton Hall 40-24 and held the advantage on the offensive glass 13-9.

Pacing Seton Hall was Isaiah Coleman with 13 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Scotty Middleton finished with nine points and four rebounds off the bench after his game-winning tip-in versus Connecticut Saturday afternoon.

Coleman got the Pirates on the board first with a corner three off an inbounds pass from Garwey Dual and gave Seton Hall the early 5-3 advantage with a mid range pull up, but would go on to miss his next eight shots from the field before finally connecting on a layup off the feed from Dual with less than 10 minutes to go in the game, when it was far out of reach.

A layup from Prince Aligbe gave Seton Hall the 7-5 lead less than four minutes into the game, which would be the last lead for the visitors as Jones connected on back-to-back layups for Marquette as part of a 7-0 run for the 12-7 edge.

Marquette held Seton Hall scoreless for nearly five minutes to take a 25-16 lead with less than seven minutes remaining in the half. The Golden Eagles took their largest lead of the first half, 39-19, on a bucket from Jones in the lane with under two minutes to go as part of a 15-3 run before entering the half up 40-23.

In the second half, Marquette started on a 10-3 run capped by a layup from Jones for the 50-26 lead, which ballooned to 64-33 with just over 10 minutes to go on a tip-in from Stevie Mitchell.

Seton Hall went on an 8-0 run over a two-minute span later in the second half, including an and-one jump shot from Coleman and tip-ins from Yacine Toume and Godswill Erheriene, but it was only a minor dent in the cushion Marquette built over the first 30 minutes of the game on their way to victory.

If we had a player Hurley really wanted he would take him in two seconds.
I think it depends on the situation. I don’t think Danny is saying leave Seton Hall come to UConn. But if a SHU player is in a bidding war with other schools, let’s say SJU and Georgetown, and everyone knows he’s leaving SHU, I see Hurley getting involved. But I wouldn’t call it poaching considering the player is leaving here anyway.
