STONY BROOK, N.Y. – An 89th minute goal by Stony Brook's Caleb Danquah handed the No. 11 Seton Hall men's soccer a 2-1 loss, their first non-conference loss of the season.
The Pirates made a statement in the first half when
Jared Smith scored his fourth goal of the season to put the Seton Hall up 1-0. Entering the second half, Stony Brook increased their offensive press and tried to force the Pirates into mistakes. A 65th minute Seawolves goal from far outside the box tied the game at 1-1, but The Hall fought back to try and find a response. A late attacking opportunity by Stony Brook lead to an 89th minute goal that handed the Pirates a 2-1 defeat.
With the loss, The Hall moves to 8-2-1 on the season and 6-1-0 in non-conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half began with a quick offensive surge with both teams placing shot in the first five minutes. The aftermath saw both the Seawolves' and Pirates' offenses mired in the middle third of the field, exchanging a total of seven fouls and few shots during this time.
In the 26th minute,
Jared Smith scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season on a rocket on a great Pirates attacking opportunity.
Hugo Gerbore and
Til Kauschke assisted on the goal, earning their first and fourth assists of the season, respectively. Despite entering the half with the lead, the Pirates entered the locker room being outshot 4-3.
In the second half, Stony Brook attempted to tie the game in the 46th minute, but goalkeeper
Matias Molina deflected the shot from the Seawolves' Alex Fleury that the Pirates defense safely cleared. After multiple Stony Brook attacking chances, the Seawolves' Trevor Harrison tied the game with a long strike from outside the box in the 66th minute.
In the 74th minute,
Jared Smith attempted to regain the lead for The Hall, but the Seawolves' Rushon Sandy registered the save. On the precipice of securing of the Pirates securing a draw, Stony Brook's Caleb Danquah scored a goal in the 89th minute to put the Seawolves ahead 2-1. Despite attacking chances in the final two minutes, the Pirates fell short, losing 2-1.
