Seton Hall With League-Best 4 BIG EAST Sport Excellence Award Honorees

resize

NEW YORK -- Four Seton Hall student-athletes have been named winners of the 2023-24 BIG EAST Sport Excellence Award. Softball's Kelsey Carr, women's cross country's Kate Cochran, baseball's Zack Sylvester and men's swimming's Sean Vizzard were selected as the top student-athletes in their respective sports based on academic and athletic achievement as well as community service.

The Hall's four honorees are the most of any BIG EAST institution.

The Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.

While the format of the awards allows for only one declared winner in each sport category, the selection of the recipients proves each year to be a challenge for the FAR Council, as candidate nominees represent exceptional student-athletes who excel in academics, service, and athletics, and are outstanding representatives of their schools and the Conference.

Carr was an All-BIG EAST First Team and an NFCA All-Mideast Region Second Team selection for the Pirates this past season. She led the team with 12 wins in the pitcher's circle posting a 3.35 ERA and striking out 119 batters in 144.1 innings pitched.

Cochran finished fourth on the team with a time of 21:13.25 at the Highlander Invitational on Oct. 7. She crossed the line in ninth on the team at the IC4A/ECAC Championships on Oct. 13.

Sylvester started and played in all 52 games this past season for the Seton Hall baseball team. He led the team in batting average (.315), tied for the team lead with six home runs and finished second on the team with 56 hits.

Vizzard won his second BIG EAST title in the 1650 free at the conference championship this past season. He also posted personal best times in the 500 Y Free, 1650 Y Free, and 400 Y IM at the BIG EAST Championships. Vizzard's standout campaign earned him Seton Hall Male Junior Athlete of the Year honors.

Tavana Named BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year

NEW YORK -- The BIG EAST women's soccer coaches have voted senior midfielder/forward Natalie Tavana (Middletown, Conn.) to repeat as BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Tavana was also named to the 13-member Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. The Pirates were picked to finish eighth in the 11-team BIG EAST, one vote shy from tying Creighton for seventh place. This marks the first preseason poll since 2015 that Seton Hall has not been picked to finish in the final slot of the league standings.

Tavana was named BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year after a standout junior season that saw her score 12 goals and tally 26 points. She finished with the most goals in the BIG EAST and both her goal and point totals were the most at The Hall since Kelly Smith's senior season in 1999. Tavana was named Third Team All-East Region by the United Soccer Coaches and a unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team pick. Tavana was the first Pirate to be named All-BIG EAST first team in 10 years when Ashley Clarke was named to the league's top team in 2013. She was the first Pirate to be named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year since SHU Athletics Hall of Famer Kelly Smith won the award in 1999.

In year two under head coach Josh Osit, the Pirates registered their most BIG EAST points in a season since 2011 and finished with their second-most wins in a season since 2012. Natalie Tavana and Chiara Pucci made All-BIG EAST teams, which was the first time multiple Pirates received All-BIG EAST honors since 2013.

More Rothstein

By Colin Rajala

Trove: With The Hall SHU losing three prominent pieces to the portal in recent years in Tyrese Samuel, Kadary Richmond and Dre Davis, what do you think Seton Hall needs to do to try and retain top players as well as bring in top talents?

Rothstein: I think the highlight is the incredible opportunity to play in the Big East, a basketball centric conference where you're playing in the biggest media market in America in the New York metropolitan area. Also, we're seeing more and more players develop, players get better when they go to Seton Hall, so it’s demonstrating that to prospective players.

Congrats to Collin

Colin will either have a child today or his wife will be induced tomorrow. Could not happen to a better young fellow. All prayers for a healthy baby.

Because of the child Colin will be off the board until the season begins. Zack will take his place and handle the work load.

Once the season begins Zack will no longer be writing for us. The workload has overwhelmed him and he wants to concentrate on others things. Zack will be missed. Between he and Colin I had a fabulous 1-2 punch. Two great guys down to one.

Before the season begins I should have a replacement. If not I'll do more myself.

Trove: With so many new faces, how important is the summer for a team like this to get acclimated and gel before the bright lights and pressure situations?

Rothstein: Its incredibly important. The one thing that's going to be a common denominator with the new guys on the team is they're going to have to defend at a really, really high level to play for Shaheen. I’m sure that is something that is going to be drilled in every practice and every workout. With that said, this team, I think, has significantly more holes to fill because it's such a brand new team. I think Dylan Addae-Wusu is going to be an extremely critical piece for this team, because he has history in the system and playing in the Big East. There's not a lot of player retention, so I'm looking at Addae-Wusu and Isaiah Coleman as players who need to be kind of the pillars or the foundation of this team.

Trove: Who on the current roster might be flying a little under the radar presently?

Rothstein: A guy that we're not talking about yet is Garwey Dual, who came in last year as a top 50 recruit. I mean he could be a wild card.
