Coleman, Dawes Pick up BIG EAST Weekly Honors

resize

NEW YORK - Freshman Isaiah Coleman (Fredericksburg, Va.) has been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week and senior Al-Amir Dawes (Newark, N.J.) has has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, the conference announced Monday.

Coleman becomes the first Pirate to win multiple BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors since 2014-15, when Khadeen Carrington, Angel Delgado and Isaiah Whitehead each won the honor more than once.

Coleman was once again a difference maker off the bench for the Pirates, scoring 11 points in the 88-75 win over Northeastern on Wednesday night. Coleman played 24 minutes on the night, shooting 4-of-6 from the field and picking up three steals.

Dawes lands on the honor roll after a stellar performance against the Huskies last week. The senior dropped a career-high 25 points to go with five rebounds and five assists as part of the 13-point victory for the Pirates. Dawes also connected on four 3-pointers, improving his team's record to 30-14 all-time when he knocks down three or more triples.

The Pirates head back on the road this Tuesday night to face No. 6 Baylor at 9 p.m. on ESPN2 in the BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle. Following that comes the latest installment of the Garden State Hardwood Classic as the Pirates will host Rutgers on Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. on FS1. Both games will be broadcast on the Seton Hall Pirates Basketball Radio Network on the SHU Pirates Mobile App, SHUPirates.com, Varsity Network, SiriusXM and the SiriusXM app.

Power Rankings

Jeff Borzello, ESPN Staff Writer

It took less than a month for men's college basketball to go completely haywire. Eight teams in the top 16 of the previous edition of the Power Rankings suffered losses this past week. Two of those squads, Duke and Villanova, lost twice. Included in that group was last week's Nos. 1, 3 and 4. How will all of that impact the rankings?

Arizona moving up to No. 1 is the easy part. The Wildcats were No. 2 entering last week and cruised past Colgate in their lone game of the week. Not only are they still unbeaten, they also own a road win against Duke and a neutral-court victory over Michigan State. Both of those wins have lost some of their luster, but Arizona's résumé is still more impressive than those of most of the other unbeaten teams in the sport.

What about the rest of the top five? Kansas and Purdue have fantastic résumés for one-loss teams: The Jayhawks have defeated UConn, Tennessee and Kentucky, while Purdue has wins over Gonzaga, Tennessee and Marquette. It's also difficult to drop UConn too far for a short-handed four-point loss at Kansas. Then there's Houston, which continues to roll on without a loss.

So, while there was absurdity across the board on the court, the top tier of teams feels fairly stable -- for now.

On to this week's awards and rankings ...

Team of the Week: Wisconsin Badgers

There are a half-dozen really good options for this award. Northwestern took down top-ranked Purdue (the Wildcats will get their love shortly), Kansas handed UConn its first nonconference loss since 2022 and Arkansas and Georgia Tech (more on them in a bit too) both knocked off Duke. But Wisconsin led wire to wire against in-state rival Marquette on Saturday, ultimately coming away with a 75-64 win.

Max Klesmit was sensational in the first half, scoring all 21 of his points -- including five 3-pointers -- before halftime, with the Badgers jumping out to a 16-point lead just before the break. Marquette cut it to one with 11:26 left in the game, but Wisconsin responded with a 6-0 run, and the Golden Eagles never got closer than five the rest of the way. Steven Crowl finished with 16 points and eight boards.

Combined with Monday's blowout win over Western Illinois, Wisconsin has now won five in a row since opening the season with two losses in its first three outings.

Player of the Week: Boo Buie, Northwestern Wildcats

Buie probably doesn't want to play Purdue every game, but there's something about the way he lifts his performance whenever the Boilermakers come to Evanston, Illinois. Last season, he finished with 26 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks and 3 steals in Northwestern's 64-58 upset of Purdue. This season, he was even better. The senior guard went for 31 points, 4 rebounds, 9 assists -- and zero turnovers. Buie constantly hit big shots, including what looked like the game-winning bucket in the final seconds of regulation. He then followed that up with seven points in the extra session.

In addition to Friday's performance, Buie opened the week with 23 points, four 3s and seven assists in an easy win over Northern Illinois.

Win of the Week: UNC Wilmington Seahawks 80, Kentucky Wildcats 73

There also are plenty of options for this award, but UNC Wilmington's victory in Lexington might have been the most shocking of the bunch. Four days before the game, the Wildcats had battered a top-10 Miami team by 22, looking like an offensive juggernaut and a legitimate Final Four team. Two days before the contest, UNCW lost at East Carolina, a week after losing to Appalachian State by 30. And yet, on Saturday, the Seahawks went into Rupp Arena and picked up the program's first road win over a ranked opponent.

UNCW led the entire first half, growing the margin to as large as 14 points with 2:55 left before halftime. Kentucky, behind Reed Sheppard's 25 points, fought back to start the second half and opened up a six-point lead with 13 minutes remaining. At that point, it looked like order had been restored and the Wildcats would cruise to victory. But Trazarien White scored seven straight points to spark a 13-1 run and give UNCW a lead it wouldn't relinquish. White finished with 27 points and 10 boards.

Rule needs to change

Who saw the end of Georgetown TCU ? Players steps out of bounds as he jacks a three as time expired. Ref standing right there is looking at the ball leave his hand with plenty of time, and not at his foot. Reply declares the shot counts since there was not rule in out of bounds during live action, therefore that can not be changed.

Do you agree

And I want everyone to know I am a Crimson Tide fan as I note this below....

How I would rate the college FB playoffs

1. Michigan 13-0
2. Washington 13-0
3. Alabama 12-1
4. Georgia 12-1

5 Texas 12-1
6 Florida State 13-0

How I believe the top 4 will be rated

1. Michigan 13-0
2. Washington 13-0
3. Texas 12-1
4. Alabama 12-1

5. Florida State 13-0
6. Georgia 12-1

What do you guys think?

OPEC + Cuts Oil Production Again

OPEC + cuts production by another million barrels a day as oil went under $80 a barrel. This is I think the fourth production cut in a year and a half. It seems every time we are heading for sub $3.00 a gallon gas, OPEC+ cuts production. https://www.energyintel.com/0000018c-2197-d894-a3ce-33bf0d7d0000

Meanwhile, US production sets record of producing the most oil ever.

Tae Davis

Watching the ND-Miami game.Tae Davis is starting at PF for ND.He has 8 points in the first half, has added 15 lbs to his body, handles the ball well and makes good decisions. What a front court we'd have with Samuel and the Davis brothers.Makes me sick. The NIL groups should start their presentations with videos of Samuel and Davis in Florida and ND uniforms/action.Really brings home the need to be competitive.

Upset Watch

Two from our conference go down. Not a good look….

Marquette loses on the road to Wisconsin 75-64
NOVA loses At Home to Drexel 57-55 Villanova can kiss the top 25 goodbye for a long t8me after this week.
Also, Duke loses on the road to Georgia Tech 72-68
I trust at least Illinois will take care of business on the road with no trouble.

Anyone agree with this choice

Deion Sanders is SI’s Sportsperson of the Year despite Colorado’s last-place finish

By Ryan Glasspiegel

Sports Illustrated apparently does not subscribe to the old Herm Edwards axiom that “You play to win the game.”

The magazine has bestowed its prestigious annual Sportsperson of the Year award upon Deion Sanders, despite Colorado losing its final six games and finishing in last place in the Pac-12 with a 1-8 conference record.

The accompanying gushing profile was written by veteran college sports reporter Pat Forde.

“There are numbers that define the Prime Effect upon the University of Colorado in Boulder, a place that hasn’t always had a chummy relationship with football,” the story read.

“First-year applications are up 26.4% year over year; Black or African American applications are up 80.6%; nonresident applications are up 29.8%; and international applications are up 38.4% from 97 countries, including 16 that didn’t have any applications last year.

“While those numbers cannot be definitively linked to Sanders, others can be: September sales at the school’s online team store were up 2,544% over the same month in 2022. Every home game in 50,183-seat Folsom Field was sold out for the first time in school history.”

While it’s possible arrangements were made a month or two ago for Sanders to receive this award when the Buffaloes’ stock was higher, the story mentions some of the ups and downs — but not all of them.

“As for the actual football? It’s been an adventure. Colorado is massively improved over 2022, when it was by far the worst Power 5 program. The Buffaloes were outscored by 29.1 points per game last year, compared to 6.7 this year,” the story says.

“Las Vegas set their over-under total at 3.5 wins coming into the season, and the Buffs surpassed that in early October. But there have been pratfalls. For all the acclaim Sanders has received, he’s also gotten criticism for blowing a 29-point lead to a bad Stanford team, for mismanaging the clock in a couple of games, for strangely demoting offensive coordinator Sean Lewis.”

What it doesn’t mention, for example, is that Colorado lost its final game of the season, by six touchdowns, to a Washington State team that had just one other Pac-12 win this season.

Perhaps one day Sanders could earn Sportsperson of the Year honors for a deserving coaching performance, but if you believe in the idea that you play to win the game then this year’s award should have gone to a champion such as Nikola Jokic, Bruce Bochy, Travis Kelce, Novak Djokovic or perhaps even Angel Reese.

LAST GAME
Sophomore Micah Gray (Oklahoma City, Okla.) banked in a three-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime, but the Pirates were outlasted by No. 25 Princeton, 75-71, in double-overtime.

Trailing 59-56 with one second left, Gray banked in a shot in front of her bench to force extra basketball. With under a minute remaining in the second overtime, Azana Baines (Blackwood, N.J.) hit a pair of free-throws to give The Hall a 71-70 lead. The Tigers' Skye Belker hit a jumper with only 37 seconds left to put Princeton back ahead, and then Princeton iced the game on the free-throw line.

The Hall bested the strong-rebounding Tigers, 43-to-36, but it committed a season-high 28 turnovers and was just 10-for-20 from the free-throw line.

Gray was brilliant, going for a game-high 24 points on the strength of 7-for-13 shooting from three-point range. She also had a season-high six rebounds. Baines had a tough night shooting the ball, but still collected her first double-double of the season with 12 points and a season-high 11 rebounds.
