HILLARY- Godforbid!

I can get on board with that.

Step 1. Make it fair - Ensure all valid citizens are able to obtain voter identification
Step 2. Prevent voter fraud though use of voter ID

You seem to be putting step 2 ahead of step 1.

Possibly but anyone that wants to make the effort to vote should also be able to make the effort to get a photo ID, it's not rocket science here.

And cern, there's your answer.

Maybe you missed the article that I posted earlier in this thread.
It is not as easy as you think it would be.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/poli...5474ec-20f0-11e6-8690-f14ca9de2972_story.html

Stupid article, anyone can find one specific incident to justify their position.

Those same groups highlighted in this article also spend a much larger percent of their disposable income on playing the lottery than other groups. Do they know they can't cash any big winnings without a photo ID?

More woe is me crap.......

great news on the voter ID front! I imagine the appeals will keep coming in different states, hopefully with the same results.

http://www.cnn.com/2016/07/29/politics/north-carolina-voter-id/index.html

See the thing about these voter ID laws is that on its face it's a reasonable thing to ask for to most Americans. However, when you peel back the layers of this onion, it's real goal and effect is to prevent poor people and African Americans in voting. These people would likely vote for Democrats. Hell, even southern federal appellate court judges are seeing the truth.

It's common sense, not liberal or conservative: everyone gets one vote. I'm OK with Merge's plan of having a system in place before having restrictions, but there has to be accountability with voting. Voter turnout is always shamefully low, is it all Republican shenanigans? No problem with MoveOn and Change.org bribing people to vote and physically bringing them to the polling centers?

This is a terrible comment to make. If you have an ounce of class you should delete your own post.

Just saw this.....
just to show you I'm not hard hearted....... my point was (maybe in-artfully stated) that how much hand holding must be done here? At some point individual citizens must bear some responsibility.

IMO, the issue is not hand holding. The issue is one party doing something for no other reason that to limit votes from a sector that does not favor them. You think the same would be done if evangelicals had a thing against govt IDs? Voter fraud has not been an problem. This is only a way to limit voters.

There are all sorts of inconsistencies that have been reported in vote counts over the years. You can't say unequivocally that there is no voter fraud.

evangelicals???? you can't make your point with hypotheticals.

This is a way to limit fraudulent votes. No more.... no less.
There needs to be some common sense checks and balances.

“We are convinced that [Trump] would be a dangerous President and would put at risk our country’s national security and well-being,” said the former officials, many of whom held top positions in the George W. Bush administration.

“Most fundamentally, Mr. Trump lacks the character, values, and experience to be President,” they added. “He weakens U.S. moral authority as the leader of the free world. He appears to lack basic knowledge about and belief in the U.S. Constitution, U.S. laws, and U.S. institutions, including religious tolerance, freedom of the press, and an independent judiciary.”

Dismissing fraud out of hand? You're better than that, 75.

It has been shown pretty conclusively that the repub movement for ID cards was not based on a jump in voter fraud. Is there fraud? Of course. Was this an attempt top stop it? No. It is an attempt to suppress votes.

We don't but this thread seems to consider that a fact.

Not just us but our court systems as well consider them to clearly be attempts to suppress votes.

Why haven't absentee ballots been attacked by republicans? Absentee ballots require no evidence of ID or that they were not tampered with but... Republicans get more votes from absentee ballots than democrats do.

They tried to limit early voting in NC, why do you think that is?
Because they have the capacity to efficiently handle all voters on election day? No... Because black people vote early?
Why did NC try to cancel Sunday voting? To observe the Lord's day? No... To stop black churches from helping and encouraging their constituents to vote.

If you can't see it, take off the blindfold.

Absentee ballots should require ID, as well. You're not debating with Republicans here, you're debating with pragmatists. I have to ask, honestly: why did they try to limit early voting in NC? I'm not aware of the racial/cultural significance of people of color voting "early."

If you just look at what happened in North Carolina, it is painfully obvious that the voter restrictions were not intended to prevent voter fraud.

Living in suburban NJ all of my life, I don't really have an understanding as to the why... but the data does show that African Americans are more likely to vote early, and more likely to vote on Sunday and favor democrats while absentee voters typically are more conservative. Republicans have been trying to limit access to voting for 2 out of those three situations... Doesn't really take an investigative journalist to understand why.

Black churches throughout many States in the south and Midwest take bus loads of parishioners to vote early on those Sundays -- "Souls to the Polls". Those black churches vote heavily for Democrats. Republican legislators and governors want that to stop -- so they can keep power.

Ah, ok, thanks. I know the Democrats like voting early and often, so that makes sense.

I still agree with Merge - make election day (particularly the national elections) a holiday, and people can go at the crack of dawn, driven, bribed, and fed by the Democrats.

Democrats encourage people to have their voices heard.
Republicans try to create laws to limit those voices.

I am pretty comfortable with the side I am on for this one.

African Americans have been kept down for years under Democrat policies.....
It really is all about the vote and power.....

Democrats have been very adept at convincing minorities that they are the party that looks out for them...

Democrats have been in power in most major cities for decades... so where are the gains for African Americans?

Food stamps and disability payments are at historic highs..... that is not an accident.
The more on government benefits.... the more likely the vote for the big government party.

Before I get slammed for mentioning disability payments here... there was an outright major effort to get people to sign up for disability payments and the motive was not entirely pure and the disabilities not entirely legit.

More people are off of the employment roles than ever... 95 million or so.... that works to Democrat benefit in two ways..... keeps the unemployment numbers look deceivingly good and keeps those people on the big government dole..... more votes....

It is admirable that members of this board back the poor minorities right to vote. They are on the side of all that is right and pure in this country..... Some of those same people should look at what is really happening with the poor and see how they are manipulated by their so called saviors. They should voice concerns for the gun violence in those same cities that cost thousands of African American lives a year..... in some cities that have the strictest gun control laws in the land.

I'm sure this post will get cherry picked for comment.... and that my contention that African Americans have been kept down for years under Democrat policies will be lost.

This is total BS. Both parties encourage what they want for both parties end of story. Neither party actually cares about the American people. They care about getting reelected and controlling things. If they actually cared they would agree to letting third parties debate for instance without having 15% + in major polls. They would care about sharing real ideas and not just about getting reelected. Getting reelected is what drives many of these policies including the voting laws. To say one party cares about encouraging people to have their voices heard is really drinking the cool aid.

Ridiculous, democraps pander to minorities by keeping them locked on the plantation.

The republicants pander to the special interest groups as well.

Both sides pander.

I am just pointing out that one group has been actively finding ways to prevent people from voting.

If democrat as were out there trying to create laws which would block absentee ballots i would say the same about them.

LOL, it's not like the democraps have never tried to suppress the military vote!

And they tried letting people guilty of committing felonies vote. Not that there aren't enough folks in both houses who have committed felonies -lol.

I asked that question already, and the white suburbanites had no answer.

As far as Democrats and having voices heard, I can't remember, what did Mary Jo Kopechne say?

It's a question worth asking again..... and again... and again..... same answer.... not much and under Obama even worse than not much.

The same as Sean Smith, Glenn Doherty, Tyrone Woods, and Chris Stevens.

Jesus.... This thread has gone off the deep end.

Whatever you think of their pandering methods, both sides do it. This is not about asking why black peoples vote for democrats or why poor while southern people vote for republicans ... This is about putting laws in place that will prevent legitimate votes.

You are all ok with that. Fine.
I, and thankfully the recent judges decided the cases, are not.

I will always let the chips fall where they fall but would like to ensure that all votes are by American citizens that are registered to vote and they are real citizens. That's it. You can fix this as I've said before by putting resources in the right places. Our politicians just don't want to actually fix this because different approaches fit different agendas.

And it still doesn't make any sense why you need to identify yourself for many things in life yet they are not considered racist but ID for voting is. Democrap judges??

Because... As I have explained previously there are a lot of poor minorities who do not have ID, not the required documents to get one.

Once you fix that, THEN you can require ID for voting.

I already agreed with you about making ID's available before making them mandatory. When anyone starts spouting about how "their" party is the good guys, and the other side is the bad guys, that's when I start thinking how much easier life would be if I, too, had a lobotomy.

Agreed but to then go off on the "democraps only want voices to be heard" crap is absurd.

And what about all those other racist organizations that require ID such as the welfare office and the lottery the poor and downtrodden make so much use of?
