Kavanaugh and #me too

I think what I just saw is that it got out of committee with an 11 to 10 vote and the ball is now in McConnell's Court to decide whether they're going to have an FBI investigation prior to the floor vote on the Senate.

Basically he doesn't have the votes without an FBI investigation.
If they vote Tuesday he will not be confirmed.

That;s how I see it.

Not the worst idea to delay a week but this is still a sham as 1) Feinstein corruptly held back the letter, and 2) the FBI doesn't render an opinion, just takes and presents statements. Still this should help Kavanaugh with all the statements already made from the supposed witnesses. If they change their stories now, they will prove to be not credible at all.

Although... The FBI can now ask all involved if they knew Kavanaugh to be a heavy drinker beyond what he said yesterday, they can ask about the yearbook quotes and what their intention was.
They actually have a lot to ask to see if Kavenaugh was misrepresenting his history in front on the committee which would make him less credible as well if he was.

What would any of that prove? What do varying perceptions of drinking have to do with whether he lied about it? He said he drank and that he got sick from drinking. Are you thinking that two or more will corroborate that they saw him passed out on the same night at the same place?

Not a bad compromise for the Republicans heading into the midterms. They've taken the one major issue off the table and can say the FBI investigated it and have put one week guard rail on the process with a scheduled vote for next week. Flake, Collins and Murkowski along with the three Dem senators that are on the fence would now also have political cover in their own states....because that's what it's all about...politics.

Not even something that can be based on perception, but for example if 2 of his friends say he was lying about what his yearbook quotes meant - Would that matter to you?

None of that is relevant or in the scope of what the FBI would investigate, kinda silly.

Unfortunately those things are all subjective, not facts. There are people who drank a lot but looked & acted fine but were completely smashed and recall little, and other who looked like a drunken mess and recall all, plus others who seem to act drunker than they really are. How is someone going to recall how things were 35 years ago?

I know with my group of friends, stories about things that happened 15-20 years ago are widely viewed and told different by all people involved.

But I would still say the should have to FBI ask people involved some questions, and present a report to Congress as long as can be done in a timely fashion, no more delays or demands by witnesses.

The FBI won't ask those questions. They will ask what they know about the incident and that is all.

In the grand scheme, no.

That's crazy.
You might not personally care about the topic but lying under oath to the judiciary committee is disqualifying no matter how small the lie.
So two people think a term means one thing and the other person thinks it means another. Let’s throw out his entire career for that one item. And I’m crazy?

Really depends on what the FBI hears. If they talk to multiple people who say something different than Kavenaugh about drinking, the yearbook or whatever and that they believe Kavenaugh was lying about then it will be a problem.

This isn’t throwing out his career. If he lacked candor during his testimony then he doesn’t deserve a promotion to the highest court.

Entirely possible there are no issues and he is confirmed next week as well.

Pete. You are pissing into the wind with these geniuses.

Yearbook entries. Riiiiiight.

Reminds me of the Pueblo and the Hawaiian good luck sign. Lol

On a historical note I recently found out the Alaskans did the same thing with their totem poles.

That’s a stretch of momentous proportions. Do you really think the FBI is going to bother with such minutiae? “Kav said Ralphing meant this; Judge said Ralphing meant that... therefore he must have assaulted her”.

I think they are going to investigate his drinking habits and his treatment of women. If what they find is in line with his testimony, then things will move forward. If things don’t line up with his testimony, it will be a problem.

No they’re not, they are limited in scope to Ford’s allegations, this is not an open ended special counsel witch hunt.

I don’t believe that is accurate. My understanding is that allegations that have been made to date will be investigated, not just Ford... the limiting scope will prevent any future allegations from being investigated.

You seriously don’t think the FBI is going to ask basic questions about Kavenaughs character?

Didn’t read this whole thread so I’m sorry if I’m repeating. Just out of curiosity didn’t this Kavanaugh guy have about 5 or 6 background checks in his career? Nobody found anything on this guy. How come we’re not holding those people who found nothing accountable? Those people were supposed to do a job and if this stuff is true they are all negligent. They wasted tax payer dollars. All of them. Now should they have done thorough background checks and this process is a waste of tax payer dollars someone needs to be held accountable. The politicians on both sides are a mess and we’re all paying for it. They’re fighting for party more than the constituents they represent. It’s sad. This isn’t a Trump problem. It’s been happening for many years. The party ideals are more important than then the people.

Do we really expect the FBI to be keeping a tally of how many beers he drank in High School? I understand he may have thrown some sand at another preschooler.

Come on man. I believe what the left is doing is a complete joke but at the same time who did they talk to during his background check only his mom, dad, and wife? How did they not come across these people from HS or Yale that have now come forward, especially if there’s all this talk about people saying he was a lush and a woman abuser. Now either they couldn’t find these people because it’s not true or they did a pretty crappy job of a background check.

Because no one is disputing that he drank beer and partied in high school...even he supports that....so how much more should have the FBI investigated that? Drinking beer doesn’t rise to the level of criminal activity last time I checked and no one has indicated that he has a drinking issue in his entire professional life. What are you expecting from the FBI? And outside of Ford, the other claims have been a complete joke....totally unsubstantiated. Did the FBI “miss” Ford if it’s true? Based on the non-corroborated evidence how do you hold them accountable at this point?

Where did I say the problem was his drinking and the FBI should have picked up on that. I could careless he was a lush. There’s no problem with drinking. We all did it. The question is when he was drinking did he grope or do anything more to women that he shouldn’t have. That’s not something that should be ignored.

The previous background investigations already performed would have delivered any information about his drinking and character based on statements made by anyone that the FBI talked to.

I believe the FBI focus in the next week will be on trying to establish when and where the alleged event occurred and if Kavanaugh was at the alleged event. They will also try to determine if Kavananugh committed the alleged offense in the absence of knowing the aforementioned.

You’re right. The FBI will probably walk in ask if they ever saw Kavenaugh molest someone and walk out...

They are going to follow up on claims of drunken sexual aggression towards women. Of corse they are going try and establish his character in high school and college. Of course they are going to ask how much he drank.

If the statements the FBI receives support his testimony, he will be confirmed. If they don’t, he won’t.

They don’t “establish character”...they interview and report findings.

My comments on drinking were directed at merge. The line of FBI questioning is going to be about whether he assaulted women or not and if he lied about it. I doubt they are going to do gotcha questions on his drinking exploits. Two separate issues.

If merge were running the investigation he would be looking into aggressive 2nd grade playground behavior and have the FBI do a finger painting analysis...

That is not how usual investigations go, police, FBI, PIs usual just gather information, ask questions and log answers, establish time lines, that information is then turned over to prosecutors / lawyers or in this case the Senate and using the info the investigation provide they usually establish character. Especially in a case like this, don’t see FBI searching for new witnesses (unless a known witness provides other possible witnesses) or providing any conclusions or recommendations.

Right, the FBI will ask questions and write down notes... they won’t make opinions on character but they will ask the right questions to get there and the senators can make the determination.

https://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2018/09/28/us/politics/ap-us-supreme-court-kavanaugh-fbi-qa.html

“David Gomez, a former FBI counterterrorism supervisor in Seattle, said typically FBI headquarters will divide up leads that get assigned to different field offices across the U.S. for further investigation and are assigned a quick deadline. The local offices will generally assign as many staff as necessary to pursue those leads.

A good agent, he said, "would address Kavanaugh's behavior and demeanor and credibility during his high school years."”

Right so if they interview say 10 people it may be done by say 7-10 different agents from different field offices since these people are likely spread out throughout the country and they are trying to get this done quickly.

Of course they will probably ask people if he was aggressive with women or if he acted different when drunk, etc.

No, I would ask questions about people’s recolection of him in high school and college to see how much he was drinking and how he treated women. They are investigating 3 claims, so while I would also ask questions about if anyone can remember the Ford incident, I would also look to his character. Is it possible he got too drunk to remember doing something like that.

Your red glasses are clouding your judgement here. Literally people who worked for the FBI said the same thing I did. Pretend he was nominated by Hillary if that helps you.

Red glasses...lol. Are they going to poll the high school and Yale student body?

If there is no corroborating evidence after they talk to each alleged witness, what relevance will his drinking habits have? Please share your conspiracy theory on this one...

Ford believes she was attacked by Kavenaugh and has apparently passed a polygraph.

Is it possible that Kavenaugh was so drunk he did this but does not remember? Establishing a picture of how much he would drink, how drunk he would get and how he treated women while he was drunk is all relevant here. All of that is going to come up in their questioning.

Phil Mudd yesterday said the same thing I did. And before you accuse me of repeating a talking point, I posted my thoughts on what the investigation would look like before this interview.

But it still provides zero corroborating evidence. Both Kavanaugh and Ford look like they partied in high school.... it really doesn’t matter.

You do realize in even criminal sexual assault cases that there is very little corroboration, why! Cause no one does this in front of a lot of witnessses. Here we have someone who. To only calls out a powerful person In Kavanaugh but also says that another was there to witness it. And yet Kavanaugh doesn’t stand up and say, het get Mark Judge in her to deny it it like an innocent man would. His actions and his behavior does not match a man that was accused wrongfully.

Sure that’s your opinion but that doesn’t prove anything. Ford and Kavanaugh both made compelling interviews but there is zero corroboration thus far for her story. And we understand why you have that opinion.
