Moderna vaccine at 95 percent effective rate

I hope you are right that there will be a high adoption rate. However, there are some of the hardcore Trump people who think this Covid thing is a fake. Sure, these same people hate wearing a mask and continually talk about having their liberties taken away, yet will not take the vaccine. This will be an interesting time. I think some sort of identification verification of someone that has taken the vaccine will be developed so that they can then enter bars, restaurants etc to ensure the other customers that it is a safe environment.
Since it will take a long time to vaccinate a good amount of the US population, not to mention the world, it is not a huge deal if certain segments are against the vaccination as of right now. Remember, the goal early on is to slow down the spread, not totally eradicate the virus from day 1. People who may be leery now, might have a totally different view after people have been getting vaccinated for 6 months. Also, I agree I could see where certain things will require or at least strongly encourage people to be vaccinated.

I think the bigger problem would be if the vaccines are seen as not effective, do not offer a "long term" immunity or people develop side effects. Thankfully, as of now, the trials are not indicating this is an issue.

Respectfully I think the thing you don't understand is this vaccine will not be successful unfortunately. Too many people will refuse to take this vaccine. We will still be in the "Pandemic" phase for a few years.
respectfully you sound full of crap. the ones who are vulnerable like pre existing, older, frontline workers etc will all get it. when they are protected then we can go ahead and act like its the flu. enough people will get it to where it will put a dent in the hospital numbers.

and you could incentivize people to get it as well. maybe through insurance credit or something like nascar allowing all fans who get a vaccine. then youll see people get it.

I will remember this post! I hope you are right!

its simple. lets give people a choice... reject it and spend a longer time in this wretched condition... or just get it and get on with your life.

I do think it will be the former. Only time will tell.

FYI- Got some intel today. NJ shut down should be announced by end of this week. Restaurants going to take out and non-essential businesses closing. Will go until mid Jan/early Feb.

Yet, now, seems the most important thing in your life is screaming again about the apocalypse. I wish your family well, but keyboard warrior I am not. I don’t hide anonymously and don’t type anything that I wouldn’t say directly to someone.

Governor Murphy is preparing us for the new normal. This will include mask wearing for the rest of our lives. Not sure how you can deny this when the governor is even hinting at the "new normal" in this tweets.

Just can’t fix stupid. We’re all working in the new normal, that doesn’t mean permanence.

Did you you read the tweet? He's talking about living in a new normal after vaccinations are out for months. Unfortunately the government will have a lot more power and force us to wear masks.

Regarding adoption rate of the vaccine - this survey was taken by Gallup in late October and you can see the trend is more folks are willing to take it and I think this continues to move up.

Hello. Sample size is 150? Who are the 150 people? 150 sample size is a large population? They represent the 330 million Americans?

Ok. You are confident this poll speaks for the country? This poll reminds me of the ABC/Washington Post poll that report Joe Biden would win Wisconsin by 17%

This poll says 60% of NJ residents would take vaccine, but both this one and the other poll above were both conducted before several major events, so I actually think results would be higher if conducted today:

Biden winning election
Pfizer results
Moderna results
Surge in new cases / new shutdowns

I think all of those things will make people more likely to get a vaccine, especially NJ residents.

I agree. I think over time we get to about 65% vaccination rate and possibly a few percentage points higher. The virus will still be around but hopefully less prevalent. Then over time they have to figure out how long the protection from the virus is from the existing vaccines. What could drive a higher rate will be rules put forth by companies, schools, health care industry etc on if their employees are required to be vaccinated to go to work, school, etc.

NJ residents are sheep, of course they will do anything Dear Leaders Phil and Judy tell them.

Newsflash...the vast majority of people that are dying from COVID are very old and/or are unhealthy. Want to survive the virus...any virus? Live a healthy lifestyle and take extra precautions if you are over 70. But the mask....

Unintended consequences...by shuttering in place we are becoming even more unhealthy. People are eating more carbs, unhealthy foods and gaining weight. Wash, rinse, repeat.

I mean the economic circumstances are certainly understandable, but why are we blaming the government there? Being home I have been eating healthier and exercising more than I was pre-quarantine. I have so much more time available without having to commute.

random samples hit statistical significance at a much lower number than youd think. just ask nyshore and neilsen numbers

That’s you; not the vast majority of the country.

Where is the government’s messaging on living a healthy a healthy lifestyle being the best way to beat the virus? Nowhere.

I think the connection between Covid impacting people with heart and lung disease as well as diabetes has been fairly prevalent.

Americans in general seem to have gotten the message.

This is wild. 1397 cases today are more than 7 days old? 18 cases reported today were from May 21, 2020

Great article. This obsession with "cases" has made me shake my head for eight months.

Then why isn’t the government delivering that message?

I think the government does deliver that message, and more importantly, the public seems to have received the message so I'm not sure what you have an issue with.

There is some data suggesting that the public (in general) is being more pro-active about their health during the pandemic. Why not just see that as a good thing?

How many press conferences have you seen where Trump, Fauci, Cuomo, Murphy have said that one of the best way to combat the virus is to eat right, get sleep, see a doctor immediately if you have comorbitities? Answer...none

I seen press avail where trump speaks of how he will have great fast food options for college athletes

Because that is not the best way to combat the virus. Doing those things does nothing to combat the virus itself which is what they needed to focus on.

It takes months to years to undo the damage from the kinds of things that are causing the comorbidities. Even if they all talked about healthy lifestyle habits and the impact on survival of Covid every day, we still have at least 250k dead today from the virus.

Not sure why you are nitpicking that the government doesn't have a better health messaging campaign... I don't really take issue with the sentiment. I think they should. But again, there is some data suggesting that the public (in general) is being more pro-active about their health during the pandemic. That is a good thing. The public has received the right messaging.

Because it is the single most important message that could have been reinforced over the past ten months. It’s not an either/or. Our fatality rate is directly related to the poor health of our population.

Disagree. It is either or.
You don’t want to mix the messaging to say that if people live healthier that they aren’t at risk because it isn’t true, and doesn’t reduce the spread. It would not have moved the needle at all related to outcomes to date.

We are where we are today with record hospitalizations and the most daily deaths in 5 months because of how politicized it has been. The government telling people to eat healthier would have probably caused runs at fast food chains and watching people pig out yelling about the government oppression.

The results are exactly what you would want to see with data that supports Americans being more proactive about their health.

Sorry, but that makes no sense. It (and has been) is a multi-pronged message. Wear masks, wash your hands, socially distance, etc. We know 90%+ who died have comorbitities. If you reduce comorbitities, guess what?

And your argument is that people will do the opposite of what the government asks? So why would mask messaging work if that’s the case? Should they stand down on that to support your thinking?

It would have been good to tell people to eat healthier, exercise more, etc.., and believe the government should be doing that now and in the future, but I also agree with Merge that being healthier does not necessarily make you less likely to catch virus, but obviously it does help in preventing long hospitals stays and death.

I would hope people at high risk due to health issues are doing what they can to be healthier in addition to wearing masks and social distancing, but assume most have not changed bad habits.

Exactly. I am not opposed to messaging about health. I am in favor of doing even more like taxing unhealthy behaviors to subsidize healthier behaviors. But, we didn't see 250k deaths to date because people didn't eat well or exercise between March and November.

It's not like the virus goes away if we all flock to a salad bar. A healthy lifestyle is just unfortunately not the "best way" to beat this virus. The best way to beat it is to limit spreading it. I'd agree the best way to protect yourself against a similar virus in the future is a healthy lifestyle.

You’re misrepresenting my posts. A healthy lifestyle is the best way to avoid being hospitalized or dying. The data supports that. Masks, distancing prevent the spread. If we were a healthier society like most other industrialized countries, we would have fewer fatalities. No one wants to talk about that.

You’re misrepresenting my posts. A healthy lifestyle is the best way to avoid being hospitalized or dying.

The part I didn't agree with was when you said, "Where is the government’s messaging on living a healthy a healthy lifestyle being the best way to beat the virus?"

In my opinion, this is not an accurate statement because that is really not the best way to beat the virus. If everyone in the country decided to eat healthier and exercise more starting on March 1st, we still have 250k+ dead.

If you believe the government should do more now so we are healthier when the next pandemic hits, I am on board.

If we were a healthier society like most other industrialized countries, we would have fewer fatalities.

Absolutely true. That should be a key point in the post mortem analysis after we have the virus under control. It will take years to be able to impact the health of the country overall in a meaningful way.
