Congratulations to Men's Basketball on a Successful 2016-17

image_handler.aspx

Since our last newsletter, our men's basketball team earned a second straight NCAA Tournament appearance; an at-large bid that came on the strength of 21 wins, including four over fellow top-50 teams. Though our tournament appearance ended in a defeat, when you look at the bigger picture, we have so much to be proud of with this group of young men. They fought back from a tough start to the BIG EAST season and rebounded with toughness to get back to the NCAA Tournament.

Our student-athletes and coaching staff are already hard at work for positioning themselves for another tournament run in 2017-18. We appreciate all the support you gave them last season and hope you'll be #HALLin for next season as well!

Our ticket office is currently taking deposits for 2017-18 season tickets, both for returning season ticket holders and new season ticket holders interested in purchasing. You can either call (973) 275-HALL or use our new online service to make the deposit.

And remember, if you make a deposit for season tickets this month, you are eligible for one of our 30-for-30 prizes! You can view the entire schedule of prizes here.

Spring Sports are Heating Up

image_handler.aspx

It's April, which means our spring sports are hitting second gear and ready to make runs at the BIG EAST championships!

Baseball: So far our baseball team has accumulated six wins over NCAA RPI top-100 teams, including a huge victory at then No. 2 Florida a few weeks ago. Conference play begins this weekend right here at Owen T. Carroll Field, so be sure to catch them against Butler April 7-9 and these other home series:
  • April 21-23 vs. Georgetown
  • May 5-6 vs. Creighton
Men's Golf: Our golfers are tuning up for the BIG EAST Championship, which takes place April 30 to May 2 in Okatie, S.C. If you're in the Central New Jersey region, this is the weekend to see the Pirates as they participate in the Princeton Invitational at Springdale Golf Club. Best of luck to our men's golfers as they look to improve upon last year's third-place finish in the conference.

Women's Golf: We're only 15 days away from our women's golf team going for a fourth straight BIG EAST championship! After competing next week at the Hoya Invitational, it'll be on to Callawassie Island, S.C., April 21-23 to go for the title. We wish our women's golfers the best of luck as they look to continue their run of dominance in the conference.

Softball: Our softball team is six games into conference play and has already proven to have a flair for the dramatic; three of those six games have been decided in the seventh inning or later. After a strong series win at DePaul, the team is home this weekend vs. Georgetown, so be sure to visit Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field to support or catch them on these other home weekends:
  • April 29-30 vs. Butler
  • May 6-7 vs. St. John's
Women's Tennis: Our tennis team has had some strong performances this season and is in the home stretch as it prepares for the April 27-30 BIG EAST Championship in Columbia, S.C. This weekend is Senior Day as the Pirates play their final home match of the season vs. St. John's Sunday. Be sure to visit the tennis courts behind Owen T. Carroll Field to support.

Hall of Fame Registration is now Open; Event is June 1

In February, we announced our Hall of Fame Class of 2017, and we are now just 57 days away from our enshrinement ceremony, which will take place Thursday, June 1 at Maplewood Country Club.

We cannot wait to induct our new Hall of Fame members: Doug Cinnella '86 of the baseball team; Debbie Hartnett '89 of the women's basketball team; John Kelly '63/MBA '68, a former chairman of the Seton Hall Board of Regents; Bryan Spoonire '95 of the men's track & field team; and the entire 1952-53 men's basketball team.

Registration for the event is now open, and you can reserve your space online for what will be a tremendous evening of catching up with some all-time Pirate greats.

I'd also like to mention that even if you cannot make the event, we greatly appreciate the support of our sponsors for this event of which there are many opportunities!

Save The Date: Donor Matching Day April 28

image_handler.aspx

Our success as an athletics department is not possible without the great support of our Pirate Blue members, and, as we continue to focus on our student-athlete centric mission of enhancing their experience and developing them into leaders, we continue to need your support.

That's why I ask that you save the date for our annual Donor Matching Day, which will take place on Friday, April 28. It is a special day that all Pirates fans, alumni, students and faculty can rally behind as we look to raise money for the benefit of our student-athletes. As always, if we receive a donation from at least one person in each of the 50 U.S. States, an anonymous donor will give us an additional $50,000!

We need the support of alumni and fans across our great country. U.S. States that have been a challenge in the past include Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming, so if you are an alumnus or alumna in one of those states or know someone who is, we really hope we can count on your support!

Stay tuned to PirateBlue.com in the next two weeks for further details, including a link to a dedicated Donor Matching Day giving site.

Student-Athlete Story on Youth Mission Trips

image_handler.aspx

Lastly, I'd like to make special mention of this terrific Pirate Sports Network story on two of our athletes - Blake Espinal of the baseball team and Olivia Gregorio of the women's cross country team - taking mission trips a few months ago through Seton Hall's Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS) program.

Giving back is critical part of the Seton Hall student-athlete experience, and we are very proud of stories like this one as Olivia and Blake showed outstanding initiative and resolve to make a difference for those in a less fortunate position than them.

Has anyone header anything about and athletic facilities improvements recently? Last year there was talk of redoing Walsh, including a new video scoreboard and also redoing Owen T. Carroll, expanding seating, seat backs, as well as much needed concessions and bathrooms. I thought those things were supposed to start this year but haven't heard anything.

We'll have that info in our annual Pat Lyons interview on the Trove during the spring.
