How much better has the range gotten? How much better do you anticipate it getting?

They have made gigantic leaps there. The first EV's were about 70-80 miles of range and the engines were slow. Now the engines are superior to gas engines and have 4 times the range as standard with many going well above that.
ow much better do you anticipate it getting?

500ish seems to be the maximum they will go for now for cars.

I change my own oil, so that's never bothered me. Once you have to replace a battery, the cost savings is now moot. Electric motors, also, are not failure-proof.

As did I. Changing oil is certainly something I don't miss. I doubt I will ever change a battery in my life, and you're leaving out other things that just won't break on an EV as well. Regenerative breaking makes the life of your breaks significantly longer and over the years I have replaced many parts that just don't even exist in my EVs.

Just a shame this is a political wedge issue. The cars are just better. I wasn't on board until I had one.
If my experience wasn't great, I wouldn't recommend it. But it has been great and that's why I got a 2nd and see no reason to go backwards.

OK, so what is the expected life of a battery? I don't think it's an unfair question. Can you routinely get >150K miles out of an EV? You say that the motors* are "superior" to gas engines - how? Longevity? Torque? HP? Reliability? If yes to the power statistics, how does performance use of those electric motors affect battery range and life expectancy?

My understanding of regenerative braking, and I've replaced a lot of brake pads over the years, was that it contributed to the charging of the vehicle by converting friction into available energy. Maybe I'm misunderstanding it, but how does that prolong the life of the brakes and rotors?

It is a fair question, and it depends. Batteries today and better than they were 10 years ago so hard to quantify but they should last somewhere between 10-20 years (which a certain amount of degradation as well) My Ioniq battery capacity is at 98% of what it was when I got it 3 years ago.

You should find one to test drive.

You don't use the breaks to slow down. You use the energy of the car moving forward to turn the engine backwards which turns that energy into electricity. Only need to use the breaks to stop quickly.

What type do you have?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But if you want a truck that can haul maybe you should look at the Ford -150 Electric vehicle. https://www.ford.com/trucks/f150/f150-lightning/. And my ugly ass Rivian makes Vans for Amazon. Seems to be getting rave reviews. https://www.cnbc.com/2023/01/14/what-its-like-to-deliver-for-amazon-in-new-rivian-electric-vans.html.

So, yes they are status symbols and they also can haul stuff around. EV's are terrific vehicles. You don't like them? I get it. You have that right. But don't say they are nothing but status symbols. Theses vehicles are far more than that. And they are there to stay.
hows that rivian stock outlook doing? your what 4x in the hole?

Yes I am down big. However, I was also down big when I bought Facebook IPO for a couple of years. I think that rebounded quite nicely. It is my biggest loser ever so far. But, I am not selling. I am a buy and hold guy. I believe in the product and the three people I have talked to who own it, absolutely love the vehicle. We shall see what happens. I am in for the long haul.

Do they cause any significant issues (guessing not)? I've had issues with Kia/Hyundai conventional engines before.

Nope, no issues at all.

The Hyundai does feel like it drives a little better overall, but I've been happy with both and no mechanical issues wither either.

Honestly with those cars, the only things I wanted was an EV at the lowest possible price.
The next time around, I will add in charging speed as well. I don't use them enough to care that much (3 times in the last 6 months fwiw) but it would be nice to take advantage of the 150kw+ charging stations.

why would you sell at this point? no place to go but up. 3 people loving the vehicle doesnt mean that much. i dont think ive seen 3 people WITH the vehicle.

Typically, you sell off your losses to offset capital gains. And perhaps three people don’t impress you but maybe Car and Driver does? https://www.caranddriver.com/rivian/r1t

Or maybe Consumer Reports. https://www.consumerreports.org/car...r1t-electric-pickup-truck-review-a3029848158/

you sell off and buy back in to a similar profile stock... are there any other ev stocks that have tanked this badly?

do you own any gas cars ?

Nope.

I'll be honest that if I took a ton of weekend trips that were 200+ miles round trip, or if I lived in a apartment / condo, I'd have a gas car but otherwise these are cheaper to own and in my opinion drive better than their gas counterparts.

A Governor, like every politician, should be judged on the entirety of their tenure.

No rooting interest, but I'd put DeSantis at the absolute top of whatever list based on his entire run in Florida. Especially on the issues that truly matter (I'm no fan of the "culture" war stuff by and large, although some stuff that gets labeled "culture war" is really not).

I think the party as a whole is realizing the former president can win the primary with a large field as he faced in 2016, while a small field means it's anyone's game. I think that's why you haven't seen many entries into the race. I do expect Pence to run, as well as DeSantis. Maybe you'll see one or two more get into the race, such as Christie.

DeSantis isn't likeable, either, and you can tell in recent months that he doesn't have the juice to run for president either.
He's likeable enough for people to be flocking to Florida in droves from places that have policies dramatically different than what's been going on down there.

He was arguably the most effective governor during the pandemic and he also did a great job dealing with the hurricane relief. As you said, people are flocking to the state and he won historic Hispanic counties bigly for re-election.

To be honest though, I think he would be help the party more if he didn't run in 2024. He can do the party more good by solidifying Florida (which used to be one of those bellwether states) and act as a proxy against the woke crowd. In addition, there is a deep bench on the Republican side and they are better off with a candidate that is not as hardline on abortion as DeSantis, if they truly want to win the election. The only person Biden can beat is Trump at this point.

He really doesn't have the the temperament to get through a campaign cycle though. Maybe that would make him a better leader, but like it or not the sales pitch is a part of the deal. He'd be better off just staying in Florida than damaging his reputation and exposing his weaknesses.

Maybe. But Biden’s like-ability is down massively even within the D party. The polls that come out regarding those not wanting him to run are pretty historic from what I read. And yet he’s seemingly running and won’t be challenged by another party insider.

Perhaps because Trump seems like the likely opponent the power brokers will Biden run again.

I would like to think substance and actual results would matter with this coming election but I’m sure you are right that ultimately is about the “sales pitch” anyway. That’s how Trump won the first time.

I’m far from an expert on every Desantis position, but on abortion isn’t he basically where the European countries are? Which seems to be where many Americans also fall on the issue?

No. Pretty far right of every European country (and the majority of Americans) enforcing a 6 week ban.
Hell, some women may not even realize they are pregnant until week 6. Almost every European country is between 10-14 weeks.

so that comment was wrong in every way possible. standard.

Abortion...just another of the many I want to do what I want, when I want, and I don't want consequences for my actions. Yes there are rare exceptions, but those exceptions are rare. For the most part it's people who knew the potential consequences of their actions and want out after the fact.

Merge’s post promoted me to check because that surprised me. Looks like Florida is presently 15 weeks. Desantis signed the bill passed in the senate limiting that to 6 weeks with exceptions. Even with the exceptions that’s extreme for me, as I tend to come out on where Florida is presently or most European countries are.

Yep, I think that's a perfectly reasonable position to have and one that I would be absolutely fine with as a compromise.
