S***HOLE COUNTRIES

No. The word really isn't important. It is the sentiment.

"Why are we taking shihole country (just happen to be all black) people instead of great country (just happen to be all white) people.

To me that is as un-American as you can get... and it doesn't matter when it comes from your mouth. It matters when it comes from the presidents.
That is my opinion.

Stop making everything about race. That's the problem with the media and the left today. Identity politics.

Maybe the presidents examples were not well thought out and this isn't about race at all.

I still have a problem with his sentiment that we should look away from accepting the impoverished towards the very well off.

Like I said yesterday, I can trace my heritage to someone who arrived in the US at age 21 with a few dollars to her name and she had left a shithole at the time. I find the sentiment, from the leader of the free world to be offensive.

Pirata answered that concern earlier Your parents/grandparents and mine came here because there was a demand for low skilled and trade workers. What do we need now? Times and needs change. We need to stop with the partisan platitudes...

I wouldn't exactly say we need people from Norway though either... right?

You all may have very valid points on what your ideal immigration policy would look like.

Tell me you believe we can't handle any more immigration because our economy can't sustain them. Fine. Tell me you believe we can't handle more because they will take American jobs. Fine.

I may disagree with you and we have the right to our opinions... but don't tell me that we can't take lower skilled people trying to escape poverty because we need more people from Norway. It's a silly argument.

I don't believe in absolutes. Of course we should not stop legal immigration completely. No one is remotely suggesting that. But what's wrong with doing a needs based assessment to focus on and attract immigrants that meet that criteria? And some of those positions are likely to be low skilled and yes a percentage allocated to those trying to escape extreme poverty or persecution.

Merge,

I have come to respect your posting because you have a thought out and researched positions. I often disagree with your views but I do respect them.

By way of continued disagreement, I see your post as equally racist.

How about :

Why are we taking shithole country (just happen to be the lease educated nation on earth) people instead of great country (just happen to be the most educated nation on earth) people.

I am wondering why you chose to immediately go to color. I don't see Haitians for their color and I don't know why you assume that anyone does.

FWIW, I was in the gym yesterday. We still have cable news there. I watched CNN and Fox side by side whilst on the elliptical.. CNN was going of the same line you are espousing. Haitians-Black / Norwegians-White; ergo Trump is a racist.

Fox was discussing merit based immigration and border security. Also discussing the need for a compassionate immigration policy.

A serious questions. Why do people of liberal leaning who claim to despise racism tend to frame every issue as matter of race?

Funny line from the movie Grown Ups was hen Chris Rock was kid in high school. The only black kid guarding the only black dis on the basketball team. Ref call a foul on Rock. He immediately replies, "why, cause I'm black?"

Of course, that was a comedy. Your comment reminds me of that.

Again, I don't wish to turn this into a battle.

Nothing. If only we had a president who could state such a concept.

If only we had a media that would report the entire context of what he does say. He has said just that, you just never get to hear it.

The MSM just focuses on naughty words and race.

Note: Han Solo, your water boy, won't like this.

What trump said is simply stupid and at least cruel - let's get that out of the way first. Whether it's racist or not leave that to the whining, easily offended public - I don't care. I just want my government to get stuff done.

I have a feeling that the Dems don't want anything good to come out on Immigration while the Repubs are involved because then it does not have a big D next to it (like what happened during the last Bush presidency when the Dems spearheaded a no vote for an immigration bill that would have served us well). They were looking for a way out and wanted to tie it to something else for negotiation purposes (the Govt shutdown). That is how politics works and they want to show they are fearlessly backing the dreamers and immigration for future votes. The Repubs were trying to tie DACA to the border wall and improving border security. So all of this stuff over the "Shithole" comment is mostly fodder for the runaway press in my opinion and dummy Trump opened the door by saying it. Most Americans just want them to get back to the table and improve immigration and border security and extend and improve the DACA laws. There are loopholes in our immigration policy and I'd like to see those fixed too but the MSM wants open borders and no laws for the world and will constantly pressure the US to be ultra liberal. Those forces are powerful and are always hard at work. Trump was a dumbass again for inflaming the situation with his words and for even agreeing to a clean DACA bill when he was on TV trying to impress the American people. I would love for the sideshow to go away but it appears it's here for good no matter who is in power.

And?

Pretend you just purchased a Hooters in Union NJ. You walk in and ask your manager why he keeps hiring girls from that shithole Elizabeth and not more models from LA...

That's basically what Trump said... except he is talking about people seeking a better life for themselves and/or their family, and he is the leader of the free world.

The reason that we don't have more immigrants from Norway is that they aren't trying to flee their country.

I don't always immediately go to color.
With most people I would give them the benefit of the doubt before making assumptions.

In this case, with Trump, there has been a tone of racism for years.
It's not like he said, we are talking in all of these uneducated people, can we target more educated immigrants to come here instead.
Specifically mentioning a white country for your ideal immigrant seems incredibly off to me and hard not to notice the glaring difference between the good immigrants vs bad immigrants.

Tone of racism for years? He used to hang out with Al Sharpton. Narcissist yes for sure and in the worst way. http://www.nationalreview.com/article/423337/trumps-pal-al-jillian-kay-melchior

Trump is a very confusing dude all around. Was a Dem for years and gave heavily to the Clinton campaigns and to many Democratic causes. Problem is in the end he will always do what he perceives is right for Trump. I'm not sure if he is a racist or if he is just always trying to cater to his perceived base? Sometimes I just think he is too dumb and listens to the wrong people. If you look at his staff it's the staff du jour (Manafort, then Preibus then Bannon etc). I think the guy listens to these folks and then starts spewing stupid stuff and that is what gets him into trouble. Then he needs someone to blame and out they go. He loves to be the center of attention and that is his ultimate fault and he will never admit he is wrong. He will try and get things done in between gaffes but he is a confusing case study for sure. For folks who paint him as a conservative I always laugh because he is far from it. Racist - maybe because I've been wrong before. But tone of racism for years?

I think this sums it up. "Tone of racism?". Sorry, I don't see it either. Why is he setting up Nikki Haley as a likely presidential candidate?

Tone of racism for years?

I could give examples... but honestly, in 2017, Something gave white nationalists the courage to go out and show their faces as white nationalists and march for their racist beliefs.

As I said then, I do not believe that even would have happened under a President Rubio, Kasick, Romney etc... and even if it did, I certainly don't think they would lack the leadership to get out there and condemn white nationalism.

I think being the face of the birther movement also has a racist tone, and it certainly played to the racists in this country.
Sorry, you don't get to rile up a bunch of racists without being complicit.

I think many would say your argument holds water in 2017 and I would not argue against that. The guy is a total contradiction and I don't like him. He needs to be more sensitive in what he says (understatement of the century). It was the "racism for years" comment that I don't see proof of and the birther movement is only racist if you say it is. If you listen to the Dems and read the MSM that is all you see but noone backs it up and noone reconciles the fact that he has given to African American causes for years and has been friends with JJ and AS and many other community leaders for years. Contradiction yes - racist for years is hard to prove IMO.

Trump condemned them at the time. Those people would have been there regardless of who was president.

This is what the left does these days. Anyone they disagree with is pegged a bigot, racist, what have you. It's really sad.

but don't tell me that we can't take lower skilled people trying to escape poverty because we need more people from Norway.

I think you are in the weeds with this one.

See the big picture.

Merit based immigration. Create a policy that shifts our focus toward gaining future Americans that can contribute. Strengthen our economy so we in turn can help others out of poverty but do so from a position of economic strength.

Oh good Lord...

Now Trump is protecting us from a plague? lol

Trump's shithole comments have ZERO to do with disease and you know it.
That is absurd.

Sorry. No. Its related.

Dengue, Yellow Fever, and Malaria in countries like Haiti is, among other things, an outgrowth of corrupt government that cannot get their shit together (no pun intended) to prevent disease.

The reason he said "Norway" was because he had just met with them. You know the guy speaks off the cuff and likely gets influence by whatever h ehard 10 minutes before.

Again, you are in the weeds and swelling on details.

Haiti was symbolic for corrupt, under-developed countries that have little to offer the world. Norway was symbolic for developed countries who can contribute.

We will never stop helping poor countries but the days of blank checks, carpet immigration, and being the dumping ground for the problems of corrupt governments who impoverish their people are over.

If you define merit as "people from Norway" I have a problem with that
If you define merit as anyone who shows the willingness and ability to work when they arrive. I am fine with that.

As the resident leftist here... Even through some heated discussion, I have never called any other politician a racist or a bigot.
I believe Trump is different with the way he riles people up and plays on their fears. If he isn't racist himself, he is riling up racists intentionally which is just as bad if not worse.

I believed his rhetoric during the campaign sounded like nationalism and months later we had racist marches.
