White Smoke on Campus - New Prez

Hopefully a good choice. Positive that he knows the University. Can he raise money? I knew the Fordham Prexy Fr Joseph McShane. Hope he is as dynamic.

He is Seton Hall. Alum, former president of the Prep and multiple high level roles at the University. Great guy and a modern priest.
Didn’t see in the release that he was “President”’of the prep. Unless I missed it I believe it only mentioned he graduated from the prep. A review of his SHU bio states he was a faculty member and the chaplain at prep.

Here is the announcement
‐------------------

Dear Seton Hall Community,

I hope your Easter holiday was filled with blessings and peace.

Today I am writing to announce the successful conclusion of our search for Seton Hall’s next leader. It gives me great pleasure to inform you that Monsignor Joseph R. Reilly, S.T.L., Ph.D., will guide the University as our 22nd president.

Monsignor Reilly’s life has been profoundly shaped by Seton Hall as a student, alumnus, faculty member and administrator. Through his decades of high-level University service, he has set countless other lives on paths to fulfillment and success.

There is no one better suited to leading the University at this moment — a time when Seton Hall stands at the cusp of extraordinary progress. Monsignor Reilly brings an unprecedented understanding of our past, present and future to the presidency. He possesses a deep faith in God and a demonstrable commitment to nurturing our students to greatness as we advance among the nation’s foremost Catholic universities.

A Mountainside, N.J. native, Monsignor Reilly attended Seton Hall Prep and graduated from the University in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in psychology. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Newark in 1991 and returned to his alma mater in 2002 as Rector of the College Seminary at St. Andrew’s Hall.

In 2012, he was named Rector/Dean of Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology, where he served until 2022. During this period, he helped strengthen the University’s Catholic foundation as a member of the Board of Trustees. After a year’s sabbatical, he undertook his most recent post as Vice Provost of Academics and Catholic Identity.

In this role, he worked to integrate the University’s Catholic mission into academics — particularly local and international initiatives, and academic programs that make Seton Hall an icon of Catholic higher education.

His appointment marks the return of a priest-president to Seton Hall, which has been a hallmark of the University for 146 years of its 168-year history.

Monsignor Reilly has played key roles in multiple pontificates. St. John Paul II named him a chaplain to His Holiness in 2005 and Pope Francis appointed him a Missionary of Mercy in 2015.

In addition, he has served the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops as a member of the Faithful Citizenship Strategy Committee and the Catholic Social Teaching Task Force.

He holds a Bachelor of Sacred Theology (S.T.B.) from Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome; a Licentiate in Sacred Theology (S.T.L.) from Pontificio Istituto Teresianum in Rome; and a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from Fordham University.

Monsignor Reilly will officially assume the presidency on July 1, 2024. In the intervening weeks, he will work closely with Interim President Katia Passerini, Ph.D., to conduct a smooth transition.

I thank Interim President Passerini for her excellent leadership over the last eight months. She will resume her role as provost and executive vice president in Monsignor Reilly’s administration.

My gratitude also goes to Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., archbishop of Newark, for his guidance throughout the search process, and to members of the presidential search committee, who devoted countless hours to ensuring Seton Hall will have a truly exceptional president.

I am confident you share my excitement about the future of our great University with Monsignor Reilly at the helm. A hopeful new day has arrived for everyone in the Seton Hall family.

Sincerely,

Hank D’Alessandro ’85
Chair, Board of Regents
Chair, Presidential Search Committee

You are correct. Chaplain.

Yeah, he was never "President" of the Prep. In fact, they never had a President, only a Headmaster.

Wow, this is a very alarming hire. A very very, very nice man, but clearly lacks the experience of running an institution. Never mind a institution that is on the rise and one of high excellence that Seton Hall aims to be. This screams of a cost savings move along with the board of regents having control of the universities Decision-making.

I
I know nothing about this man. The General is not an easy grader. So I find his optimism encouraging.
Let’s give him a chance. I know this will ignite a firestorm but Prexy here is a tough hire. The dynamic, engaging, forward thinking academic leaders are few and far between. And we haven’t been the model of stability over the past decade plus.

We also have people in high places that don’t like change and expect different results when continuing to do the same thing over and over.

I think This is a great hire. We have someone who Bleeds Blue, understands the University and all its warts and we have people screaming we needed to go outside
.Sometimes the best people for the job are right under your nose and only time will tell on this hire but knowing Joe and the BOR, I trust and have faith in this one.
Good luck Joe

Paul, Keating made a bid splash abut going national to replace PJ. A few months later we had crummy candidates from every part of the country in play. Does the name George Ravelling mean anything to ya lol... Some guy named Nee? Or the other George who won.

Hire the right guy. There is no rulebook. Hope we made a good choice.

Our last Prexy who was an alum and a Priest was Msgr Sheeran. Very good human. Constrained by Archbishop Myers at the time.

Very surprised this was announced so soon. The info I was originally given was that it would be no later than very early July but could come a little sooner. That said the hire does take place in early July.

The school is ecstatic about the choice. For now I will follow their lead in that optimism.

What would be the point in waiting until July?

Sheeran was a very nice man and great priest. As Prez SHU slid down a few rungs while he was here for way too long. Did a great job with the horrible fire situation but academically and creatively, should have been a short term Pres. This is just my opinion so take it for what it is. Myers was not a fave of mine and he very well could have constrained him quite a bit - great point. But the University slipped during that time unfortunately.

Hoping this hire is great for our University.

The fire happened while Fr. Tom Peterson was in charge.

Then they’ve made the first good move. Once decided absent truly extenuating circumstances you annouce, especially when it’s someone from within. This way it’s before the end of the school year and allows him that much more time to introduce himself.

Start of the new fiscal year and the beginning of his hire. Didn't think this was 100% done, but very close.

Obviously much closer than I was led to believe.

I don't believe so. Fr Peterson was with SHU from 1990-1995 (I wish we kept him - he changed Providence in a huge way). Msgr Sheeran's tenure was 1995-2010. The fire was Jan 19th 2000. I remember Sheeran's sermon was published and he spoke eloquently about the fire on various occasions.

Weird. I distinctly remember that Fr. Tom had the misfortune of being at PC for a terrible fire (I believe started by a hair dryer) and then the Boland Hall fire. I am suspicious of the years on that website, but also wondering if my own memory is starting to go!

Sadly the position of College/University President nowadays at the high Div 1/Top 500 schools should be a CEO Businessman or glorified Fundraiser, and the leader of the institution equates to something like a Headmaster, 2 totally different jobs. I think you must have the CEO-type, otherwise you fall behind, or risk being more of a mom and pop local school.

Like Villanova, Providence and SJU?

Yeah, he was never "President" of the Prep. In fact, they never had a President, only a Headmaster.

They have had a President for the last ten years, but that requires some explanation. Msgr. Reilly worked under Msgr. Michael Kelly, or "Father Mike" as Prep graduates of a certain age knew him as. Msgr. Kelly was Headmaster from 1980 until he stepped aside in 2014 at age 75. When he stepped aside, a titular role of President was created for him, and a new headmaster was appointed to run the day-to-day operations of the school.

Monsignor Sheeran was a good person, but he was probably stretched a bit too far as President of the university IMHO. His tenure saw the movement away from really strong student-life engagement many here talk about to the blandness and the overall malaise SHU is still recovering from.
And do you feel that newark archdiocese was directly a cause of that?
