Willard

Willard is an absolute master getting athletic directors to give him extensions he has not quite earned. There was no chance he was leaving for Nova lol.
From an AD's perspective he's gold. He has teams that play in big games during the regular season and they win many of those games which equates to ticket sales.

Amazing that a guy who has had almost zero success in the tournament can climb his way to one of the most coveted jobs in the sport. That’s not a dig at Willard btw.
He's had more success than the guy he's replacing.

I wouldn't discount the number of close games we played against them while he was here as being a factor if there's smoke. I'm sure the money people figure if he could compete with King Jay, he must have the goods.

Really? Willard would leave his situation at Maryland for Nova? That sounds kinda crazy.

What’s the buyout for him there?

Between the Neptune buyout and a Willard buyout plus contract, that is a good chunk of change.
So will Maryland lose by 30 tomorrow like the last time Willard left a job?

Remember, SMU gets no TV money from the ACC as part of their getting into the league. That’s how much money they have. They just wanted to be in a P4 conference.

Nova hiring a SHU GUY would be surprising. Willard wanting to compete with Pitino would be surprising.

Willard tried negotiating privately. It didn’t work. Now he’s negotiating in the press as a last attempt to get MD to match the Nova NIL money. They’re very far apart. Which is why he went public with this. I’d say it’s 60/40 he leaves. Let’s see if they come up with what he’s asking for.

Do you think broadcast rights fees will eventually be part of the equation?

Maryland is funded by Body Armor. They should have a large NIL bank.

Under Armour. They have to pay football gobs of money. And other sports which are also somewhat big there. Nova just has to fund hoops. They have an NIL war chest.
I’m certain Nova can match the Terps’s bball NIL fund today and into the future.

Willard wants more of the pie. They have so much money but aren’t committing it to his program. He thinks adding that to his current NIL gets them to SEC levels.

This is one of those situations we keep talking about with the football schools and share of the revenue cap and if a powerhouse hoops program like Nova outdo them (they can).

Football school life may not be for KW.

Crazy to be doing this right now though but this is when he has a podium.

Willard may not have had a winning record vs Wright but over the years Willard caused Wright fits. Curious if Wright told Nova brass Willard is the guy.

I think this is true too. It's one of those scenarios in which 2 things can be true at one time. If a coach has a foot out the door, can a team still perform? Absolutely. As pointed out, the players have every reason to for a million reasons. Sha was out the door at SPU and those kids still played their a&& off. But, to PR's point, a coach that is already out the door can have a negative effect on a team for a given game, especially during those parts of every game where there is adversity and things start to go bad.
To add to this, didn't seem to impact Will Wade's team today one bit.

The best hire Nova can make is Willard? I’m a Willard guy, but if enough of the Nova is a top 15 job if theyre hiring Willard. Top 15 jobs hire guys with proven ncaa tourney success
I’ve gotta believe Jay Wright has a big say here. My opinion is listen to him over what any of us say on this board. I guarantee if Jay said no to Kevin when asked kevin wouldn’t even be considered

Didn’t King Jay promote Neptune? Swing and a miss. Willard has now proven successful at two destinations. He would be a good hire by anybody and obviously Jay sees it that way too. This board can’t get enough of Willard’s NCAA Tournament shortcomings. I hope this is the year he quiets everyone down and makes it to a S16 and beyond. Maybe he wants to come back to The Hall to show Sha how it’s done!

SMU for the most part has been athletically irrelevant since the Death Penalty in a top 10 media market and has been a school on the move as a reaction to conference realignment and migration before the ACC
$ wise it will be one of the best programs for FB/BBall soon. School support is there

Probably tried to keep it I the Nova family. 3 years like that over there and the standard says you gotta go. We have 3 bad years and it’s well the previous guy got a 6th year. The standard hasn’t moved up in 15 years
