Even some fans got involved — and got the boot.

A wild on-court brawl Thursday night between the Arkansas State and Southern Miss basketball teams resulted in five player ejections, along with three fans being tossed in the Lady Eagles’ 57-46 win.

It all started when Arkansas State’s Emma Imevbore and Southern Miss’ leading scorer Domonique Davis jostled for a rebound late in the second quarter with the Lady Eagles leading, 30-26.

A post-whistle shove by Imevbore led to two of Davis’ teammates coming to her defense, with Noelani Cornfield pushing Imevbore.

And that’s when the commotion escalated right in front of Southern Miss’ bench, with Davis hitting the ground via a shove by Imevbore.

Imevbore and Southern Miss’ Brikayla Gray attempted to hit one another before a Lady Eagles player grabbed Imevbore from behind and pulled her away from the scuffle.

As the player pulled, she fell down, which knocked over Southern Miss assistant coach Jessica Barber.

Barber had to be helped to the locker room and returned after halftime with crutches, according to the Hattiesburg American.

The referees attempted to break it up, but the situation had already gotten out of hand.

“This could get ugly, it has gotten ugly,” one announcer said.

As players picked themselves up off the court, three fans walked down to the court, with one even putting her hands on the referee to move him out of the way to attend to a player.

Said fan started screaming — it’s hard to tell at whom — and starting moving forward, with a Southern Miss player stopping her.

The brawl ultimately resulted in the ejection of Imevbore, Cornfield, Davis, Gray and Southern Miss’ Ashja Leake.

Despite being down four players for the second half, the Lady Eagles managed to grab the win to improve to 14-10 overall and 7-6 in Sun Belt play.

“I can’t really comment because I have to follow conference guidelines,” Southern Miss coach Joye Lee-McNelis said after the game. “I just think it’s very, very, very unfortunate.

“I believe that in every incident you have in life, you learn.You may not like the consequences, but you’re goin to learn from them. I think that, which we do not believe we should have done, it won’t happen again. It will not happen again. We’ve got to understand, every decision we make, wherever we are in life, will determine our future — whether it’s tomorrow, the next day, whatever.”

Penn State trustees and high-ranking university representatives reportedly met twice in private in January to discuss whether to name the field at Beaver Stadium after late head coach Joe Paterno.

According to Spotlight PA sources, the trustees are pushing hard to name the field after Paterno, who was fired by the school in 2011 after the result of the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal.

The longtime coach died in 2012 at the age of 85.

A statute of the coach outside Beaver Stadium was also removed in the wake of the impropriety coming to light, which saw Sandusky, the former assistant coach, sentenced up to 60 years in prison on 45 counts of of child sex abuse.

Former university President Graham Spanier, former athletic director Tim Curley, and former vice president Gary Schultz also served jail time over the scandal.

University officials are reportedly hesitant to name the field after Paterno, who had over 100 wins vacated and later restored.

The meetings may violate Pennsylvania state law that requires government bodies to conduct business in public view, per Spotlight PA.

“The Administration and the Board of Trustees have embarked on numerous change initiatives based on President [Neeli] Bendapudi’s vision and goals and are focused on these priorities to continue to provide a world-class academic and student experience for years to come,” a university spokesperson told the outlet.

Paterno was Penn State’s head football coach for 45 years, winning two national championships (1982, 1986) and three Big Ten titles (1994, 2005, 2009).

His 409 victories are the most all-time by an NCAA football coach.

Before his head coaching tenure, Paterno spent 15 years with the Nittany Lions as an assistant. His 62 years with one program is the most anyone has spent with a single program.

Boca Raton, Fla. – The defense of a title begins on Friday. The 2024 Seton Hall softball season gets underway on Friday morning as the Pirates take part in the Joan Joyce Classic, hosted by Florida Atlantic University. Seton Hall will open against Michigan and Louisville on Friday before squaring off with Maine and FAU on Saturday. The weekend wraps up with a second matchup with the Wolverines on Sunday morning.

2023: A SEASON TO REMEMBER
The Pirates experienced one of the greatest seasons in program history in 2023, going 42-18 overall and 18-6 in BIG EAST play en route to the team's first BIG EAST title since 2005. The title was the third in program history as The Hall went a perfect 4-0 in the tournament, hosted by UConn, to capture the crown. Seton Hall earned the BIG EAST's automatic bid, where they were placed in the Austin Regional of the NCAA Tournament.

• The Pirates were picked to finish third in the BIG EAST preseason poll, behind second-place UConn and first-place Villanova. Seton Hall finished in third place in last year's standings.
• Seton Hall will be tasked with replacing some key producers from last year's squad. Center fielder and last year's team leader in batting average Abby Wingo, second baseman Ashly Colonnetta, and left fielder Marisa Pla have all graduated along with reserves Grace Dawson, Ally Taylor and Jordan Tressler. Pitcher Shelby Smith, who was named the Most Outstanding Player of the BIG EAST Tournament, transferred to Houston. Catcher Regan Rand has also transferred to Division-II Indiana (Pa.).
• The Hall welcome in a pair of freshmen to the 2024 squad. Outfielder Katey Brennan and pitcher Karissa Dupuis will both look to be key contributors in South Orange this upcoming season.
• Seton Hall will face a tough non-conference slate in 2024, including matchups against three teams that won NCAA regional games last season an six opponents who won at least 34 games. Included in that bunch are dates with Grand Canyon, who pulled off a shocker last season against No. 2 UCLA, as well as a rematch of the Austin Regional elimination game against Texas State.
• The Pirates will face off against opponents from three of the power conferences this season: ACC (Louisville, Syracuse), Big 10 (Michigan) and PAC-12 (Arizona State).
• Head Coach Angie Churchill is set to coach against her alma mater in Michigan. Churchill was a four-year member of the Wolverines softball team from 2001-04, winning three Big Ten titles and reaching the College World Series three times.
• The Pirates earned several All-BIG EAST awards. Kelsey Carr was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year, Abby Wingo was named Defensive Player of the Year, and the coaching staff led by Angie Churchill was named BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year. Carr, Wingo and Shelby Smith were all named to the All-BIG EAST First Team, with Carr being a unanimous selection.
• Carr is the first Pirate pitcher to be named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year. The junior led the league in ERA (1.82), reaching that number after 61.2 innings of work. Carr only allowed more than two earned runs in a start just twice during BIG EAST play.
• Carr was one of just two players in the country last season to finish with a sub-2.00 ERA, hit 10+ home runs and drive in 50+ runs (Valerie Cagle, Clemson).
• Wingo was the first Pirate recipient of the Defensive Player of the Year award. The senior had a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in 31 chances in center field. Wingo had the third-highest number of chances among BIG EAST outfielders and had the most chances among center fielders in the league.
• Abby Wingo set new single-season records in base hits (71) and longest hitting streak (19 games) last season. Her .397 average led the club, and she only failed to collect a base-hit in consecutive games twice all year.
• Seton Hall's 18 BIG EAST victories last season were a new program record, and the team's 42 wins rank as the second-most in program history (46, 2004).
• Seton Hall's win over Villanova on Day Two of the BIG EAST Tournament was its 40th win of the season, reaching that plateau for just the second time in program history. Entering the year, Seton Hall had not won 30 games in a season since 2005.
• The Pirates finished with an overall record above .500 for the first time since 2006, when they finished 29-27.

So far so good.

Last night was very close to a Must win and they passed the challenge and then some. It was strange because the crowd was never really needed, very unusual for a big game at home. The amount of people in the building during the National Anthem was alarming . The announced attendance was about 8400. I'd say 7000 in the building? A Legion of missing students and lots of empty seats on the sides.

Anyway, a,tremendous first half effort. Great defense and precision passing without all the unnecessary dribbling. Richmond used his power and Sha positioned him in the right spot to combat the Xavier defense. Everyone contributed . Coleman did a great job off the bench, no longer playing like a first year player. I thought Sanders played with confidence and focus too. Bediako looked like himself. Dawes set the tone with his first two made threes. His shot is back. Richmond looked great, very assertive and one of his best games at SHU. The coaching staff had the team ready.

So, what does it all mean? The team is getting closer to claiming the 4 or 5 spot in the conference avoiding the opening round at MSG. Third place is not out of the question.A solid jump in the NET last night. The Hall is right there on The Bubble, but close to being In. They would probably be Out if today was Selection Sunday. We are now in Crunch time. Hopefully, Dre Davis can play at SJU. This is going to be a tough game to win with or without Dre. SJU although maintaining a decent NET may be coming to the end of the road.

Newark, N.J. - Kadary Richmond (Brooklyn, N.Y.) posted yet another stellar stat line, finishing with 20 points, 13 assists and eight rebounds as the Seton Hall men's basketball team bounced back with an 88-70 victory over Xavier on Wednesday night at Prudential Center.

Richmond led the way with a career-high 13 dimes as the Pirates collected a season-best 21 assists on the night. Three other Pirates scored in double figures as well, including Al-Amir Dawes (Newark, N.J.) with 18 points, Isaiah Coleman (Fredericksburg, Va.) with 14 points and Jaden Bediako (Brampton, Ontario) with 12 points.

The Pirates (16-9, 9-5 BIG EAST) move back into a tie with Creighton for third in the BIG EAST standings. Both Seton Hall and Creighton are two games ahead in the loss column of Butler, Providence and Xavier, all of whom are 7-7 in the conference.

How It Happened

Dawes started off the evening by connecting on his first three-point attempt. After a Xavier turnover, Dawes made another three-pointer that gave Seton Hall a 6-0 lead. Xavier's first basket of the contest made it 6-2 before The Hall used a 12-0 run that stretched its lead to 16, 18-2, with 12:33 left in the first half.

The Musketeers trimmed their deficit to 12, 23-11, with under 10 minutes to go before halftime but a three by Coleman, a driving layup by Dylan Addae-Wusu (Bronx, N.Y.) and an open three made by Dre Davis (Indianapolis, Ind.) pushed the Pirates' lead to 20, 31-11. A three-point basket by Jaquan Sanders (Queens, N.Y.) with 11 seconds left in the first half gave The Hall its largest lead of the game at 24, 47-23.

Both sides went blow-for-blow through the first six-plus minutes of the second half before the Musketeers used a 9-0 spurt to cut the Pirates' lead to 15, 61-46, with 11:38 left. Xavier got as close as 14 on two occasions with under eight minutes left but Richmond proved to be too much to handle as the senior from Brooklyn scored nine-straight points from the 8:30 mark to just over five minutes left in the game that helped cushion Seton Hall's lead.

Richmond's 13th and final assist of the night led to a dunk by Bediako and two free throws made by Coleman put the score at 86-65 with three minutes to go, putting the game out of reach.
