LAST GAME
Graduate student Azana Baines (Blackwood, N.J.) collected her 1,000th career point, but the Seton Hall women's basketball team fell to No. 11 Connecticut, 67-34, at the XL Center on Wednesday.

For a second straight game, The Hall turned up its defense against the nationally-ranked Huskies, but it ran out of gas late.

I'yanna Lops (Stamford, Conn.) led the Pirates with nine points. Baines had four points along with a team-best six rebounds, two steals and two blocks.

Seton Hall All-Time vs. the Musketeers: Seton Hall leads, 20-3
2023-24 Meetings:
Seton Hall 61, Xavier 47 (F) – January 13, 2024 (Cintas Center)

AGAINST XAVIER
Seton Hall and Xavier will meet for the 24th time in history on Saturday with the Pirates owning a commanding 20-3 all-time series lead. Seton Hall has won 10 straight in the series, including a 61-47 victory earlier this season. Xavier's last win the series came in 2019, its only victory in Walsh Gym.

FIRST MEETING THIS YEAR
Graduate student Azana Baines (Blackwood, N.J.) had 14 points and eight rebounds to lift the Pirates to a 61-47 victory over a pesky Xavier team on Jan. 13 in Cincinnati.

The Hall led by only one point at the break, but held Xavier without a field goal for more than a full quarter and scoreless for 8:08 between the third and fourth quarters to pull away. The Pirates held the Musketeers to just 28 percent shooting from the floor in the second half.

Baines had a strong all-around game, leading The Hall with 14 points and eight rebounds to go with three assists, three steals and three blocks.

SCOUTING XAVIER
Xavier was picked to finish last in the 11-team BIG EAST according to the 2023-24 Coaches Preseason Poll.

Xavier continues a rough first season for first-year head coach Billi Chambers. The Musketeers enter Saturday's matchup with a 1-19 overall record and a 0-11 mark in BIG EAST Conference play. In fact, Xavier has lost 34 consecutive regular season BIG EAST games. Most recently, Xavier lost at home to No. 21 Creighton, 77-46, on Tuesday. Mackayla Scarlett leads the team with 14.4 points per game. Nila Blackford is registering 8.5 points and a team-best 8.4 rebounds per contest.

UP NEXT
Seton Hall will return to action on Tuesday, February 13 when it makes the short trip to Queens to face local BIG EAST rival St. John's. Tip time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET. The contest will be streamed by the BIG EAST Digital Network and available for FloHoops subscribers with John Fanta and Kim Adams on the call. Michael Bellifemini and Jackson Shank will carry the broadcast for WSOU FM.

Some of The Issues

Lots of blame to go around. Khadary played just an awful game at Villanova. He has to turn it around ASAP. Terrible court vision and lethargic body language. Looks like an older middle aged man at times. Of course without him we would be no where, not even close to a now Bubble Team.

For me the most glaring problem is how Addae-Wusu is killing the offensive continuity and point production. That in turn has put tremendous strain and overuse of Dre Davis. He's stagnant and has basically hit a cement wall in his shooting. These stats are not that of a quality BigEast starting 3. Since the SJU game these are his stats compared to Coleman who should be taking his starting spot in my opinion.

Creighton. 48 minutes. 6 points 12 rebounds. 1-7 0-2 from three
Providence 36 minutes 0 points 10 rebounds. 0-13 0-4 from three
Marquette 31 minutes 8 points 5 rebounds 3-9 2-3 from three
DePaul. 30 minutes 8 points 6 rebounds 3-8 0-4 from three
Gtown. 34 minutes. 8 points 4 rebounds 3-11 1-3 from three
Villanova 27 minutes 3 points 4 rebounds 1-6 1-6 from three

11-54(20%) FGA 4-22(18%) 3PFGA, Combined 1-20 in the Creighton & Providence games. Most of his points are coming at the beginning of games and almost nothing after that. With fewer minutes by far Coleman is 19-31(62%) FGA & 6-12(50%) from three while on the court. Coleman moves around much quicker, can hit from the perimeter, midrange and go to the rim. Addae-Wusu is a good defender and rebounder, I would not say great. It's Sha's job to get the most out of these two. Perhaps Addae-Wusu would regain his focus coming off the bench and the competition for playing time might light a fire under him. We need him, but he's really hurting the team right now and he disappeared after the Richmond injury.

##### 2024 BIG EAST Prediction Contest: February 10-11 #####

20 of 21 players went 4-1 this week, as all but one (Yours Truly) picked Creighton to win in Friartown. While I had the Friars winning, the perfect week didn't happen as Villanova's loss at Xavier did me in. As a result of nearly everyone having the same record this week, there is no change at the top of our standings. @GrMtWoods maintains a three game lead over @hallball and @vegaspaul82. Four players sit behind them at 51-14.

Saturday, February 10

#1 Connecticut (21-2, 11-1) @ Georgetown (8-14, 1-10) - 12:00 PM - FS1 - CapOne/DC

St. John's (14-9, 6-6) @ #7 Marquette (17-5, 8-3) - 6:00 PM - FS1 - Fiserv/Milwaukee

Sunday, February 11

SETON HALL (15-8, 8-4) @ Villanova (12-11, 5-7) - 12:00 PM - CBSSN - Wells Fargo/Philly

Go Beat Nova

I believe the Seton Hall players should be ready to pound Villanova into submission. Show up with a lack of focus and they will lose an opportunity for an important road win. We know Villanova have players that can shoot and so they are never out of a game. The key is for SHU to charge out of the gate. The crowd may disappear if things are not going well for this year's Nova team.

Dre Davis is the guy that is bringing forth a consistent effort for The Hall. He gets it and shows up with the proper mindset. His teammates must follow suit. So, Richmond, Dawes and Wusu have to also do their part. I believe we have enough physicality to score in the paint against Nova, especially Richmond. I think we will see a much better Bediako than the Gtown game. It would be nice to see SHU turn the tables and have Richmond drive and kick to Dawes and Wusu on the wings. I think Dawes is going to have a big game. Wusu MUST score through the entire game. Some midrange shots instead of bull rushing the rim. If not, Sha has to use Coleman as a weapon on the offensive side. He's showing he can do it. Coleman has to play mature and complete his closeouts quickly against the Nova Shooter's on the perimeter. It can get done this time. It's all about Seton Hall's intensity and FOCUS.

St. John’s battles but falls to Big East powerhouse No. 7 Marquette

By Zach Braziller

MILWAUKEE — Different day, same script.

Close against an elite opponent until crunch time.

Good, just not good enough.

St. John’s maddening inability to close out a game continued Saturday night in a frustrating 86-75 loss to No. 7 Marquette that saw the Johnnies blow a 15-point, first-half lead at sold-out Fiserv Forum.

They had no answer for reigning Big East Player of the Year Tyler Kolek.

After a hot shooting start, the 3-pointers stopped falling.

And St. John’s once-promising NCAA Tournament hopes took another hit, in its sixth loss in eight games.

It fell to 2-8 in Quad 1 games, and is running out of chances to boost its tournament resume.

Coming out of the final media timeout, St. John’s trailed by just two, but Nahiem Alleyne and Chris Ledlum missed layups and Marquette pushed the lead to six with 2:15 left to end any hopes for the Johnnies.

Daniss Jenkins did all he could, scoring 22 points and adding six assists.

RJ Luis had 13 and Alleyne 12. Joel Soriano’s struggles continued in another no-show, a two-point, four-rebound effort.

He didn’t even start the second half.

Kolek had 27 points, 13 assists and seven rebounds and Steve Mitchell had 14.

St. John’s was outscored by 20 after halftime and allowed Marquette to shoot a robust 59.4 percent from the field.
