This is what leadership looks like

10 days after the hurricane the causeway to Sanibel is repaired and hundreds of utility trucks are out repairing the electricity. The Governor is firing on all cylinders, trucks were waiting for the moment the bridge opened. No wasted time, Desantis is showing what good leadership is all about.

Rhoden / Pistons

Jared still can’t break thru on that putrid roster despite the Pistons finally getting rid of a lot of dead weight, especially at the guard/wing positions.

I can’t see how anybody can recommend playing in the G league anymore. Unless you skip college or have no interest in going overseas.

I wouldn’t even count it as NBA minor leagues anymore. It’s basically organized pick up games.

Migrants moving kids out of schools

I get it, there was a storm effecting the area where they were staying but moving kids out of schools is crazy. Since they are here, we need to take care of them but closing the school to house people that should not be here in the first place. This is all on Biden. 100%. We need to get a grip on this crisis. Even the sanctuary cities can't handle the number of immigrants coming in.

Rick Pitino benches captain Joel Soriano in huge St. John’s shakeup

By Zach Braziller

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Rick Pitino is benching his captain.

For the first time this season, Joel Soriano is not in the starting lineup as St. John’s looks to snap its month-long woes and play its way back into NCAA Tournament consideration.

Pitino is starting Zuby Ejiofor over Soriano, who has struggled mightily of late, in Tuesday night’s game at fellow bubble team Providence.

The 6-foot-11 Yonkers native has averaged just 11.3 points and 8.1 rebounds over his last eight games — six of them St. John’s losses.

In the team’s first five league contests, Soriano was producing 16.4 points and 10.4 rebounds.

The 6-foot-9 Ejiofor, a Kansas transfer, has come on of late and has outplayed Soriano, especially on the defensive end, where the Johnnies have struggled much of the year.

Over the last eight games, St. John’s has been outscored by 72 points with Soriano on the floor while it has outscored the opposition by 52 points when Ejiofor is on the court.

Soriano has played 105 more minutes in that span, it should be noted.

In Saturday’s loss to No. 4 Marquette, Ejiofor started the second half and finished with five points, seven rebounds and two blocks in 23 minutes.

In a season-low-equaling 17 minutes, by contrast, Soriano had two points and five rebounds. He also picked up a technical foul late in the first half that annoyed Pitino.

Pitino considered making the move a few games ago, but put off the decision, choosing to give Soriano the benefit of the doubt, according to a source.

With St. John’s reaching desperation mode, the Hall of Fame coach pulled the trigger.

Massive St. John’s game against Providence in limbo due to weather

By Zach Braziller

When St. John’s left Queens early Monday afternoon, it didn’t know how long its trip to Providence would last.

The Johnnies were under the impression at one point that the game would be pushed back until Wednesday due to a winter storm that was expected to dump at least a foot of snow on the area.

A travel ban was seen as likely.

But by early Monday evening, the forecast had shifted — only 6 inches or so were forecast — and the game was expected to take place as initially scheduled, at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Amica Mutual Pavilion.

On X, formerly Twitter, Providence’s official account wrote: “Friartown, as of now it’s game on for Tuesday at 7 p.m. vs St. John’s.”

Providence did cancel classes Tuesday, but that didn’t alter the game’s status.

The uncertainty came at a crucial time for St. John’s. It has lost six of its last eight games and is now on the wrong side of the NCAA Tournament bubble, according to most bracketologists.

The Johnnies held a 15-point lead late in the first half on Saturday at No. 4 Marquette, but were outscored by 20 after halftime, following a season-long pattern of shaky second-half performances against top competition.

A win over fellow bubble team Providence, which St. John’s (14-10, 6-7) defeated at the Garden on Jan. 10, would be a significant victory and a third Quad 1 win.

The Red Storm are currently 2-7 in Quad 1 games and need to bolster their weak résumé.

Knocking off the Friars on the road will not be easy. Providence has won 48 of the last 53 contests in the building, and St. John’s last won there in 2017.

The Johnnies have also dropped four consecutive road games, and their last three have come by double figures at Marquette, Seton Hall and Xavier.

As I see it

1. Connecticut 22-2 12-1
Best team in the country?

2. Marquette 18-5 9-3
7 in a row have them moving up.

3. Creighton 17-7 8-5
Overrated? But who else here?

4. Butler 16-8 7-6
The next group can be listed in any way you want.

5. Seton Hall 15-9 8-5
How do you beat #1 and #2 and then get your ass handed to you by a weak Nova team?

6. Villanova 13-11 6-7
Did we just see the real Nova?

7. St. John's 14-10 6-7
Maybe next season.

8. Providence 15-9 6-7
Better win their next 2 home games.

9. Xavier 13-11 7-6
Wed must win for both Xavier at SHU.

10. Georgetown 8-15 1-11
Rebuild starts in 2024/25

11. DePaul 3-20 0-12
Will rebuild ever happen?

Villanova Supersizes Win Over Seton Hall

By Zack Cziryak

The ghosts of Villanova past came to haunt the Seton Hall Pirates in an 80-54 drubbing on Super Bowl Sunday.

The Wildcats (13-11, 6-7) led by as many as 29 and saw four players reach double-digit scoring, including Eric Dixon with 18 and Brendan Hausen with 17 off the bench while Seton Hall (15-9, 8-5) was led by Al-Amir Dawes’ 14 points and 12 from Kadary Richmond.

Richmond, who exited the game with his second foul at the 13:38 mark of the first half, notched a 5-0 run himself with a floater and three-pointer after returning at the under 8 timeout to cut the Nova lead to its smallest since the onset of the game at 18-16. The Pirates would immediately give up a jumper and a Dixon corner three-pointer off an in-bound play, extending the Nova lead to 23-16.

Minutes later and down 28-21, Hall center Jaden Bediako, who was battling the flu, would have a shot stuffed into the rim for a jump ball that would head Nova’s way in time for the under 4-minute timeout. The ensuing possession would see Dixon knock down another three against a zone defense and Hausen follow it up with his own to extend the lead to 34-21 before heading into the break 39-24.

The second half was never close as the Wildcats at one point nearly doubled the lead from the half in front of nearly 14,000 fans at the Wells Fargo Center in South Philadelphia.

Villanova shot 53.6% from the field, including 46.7% from beyond the arc, where they finished 14-30, compared to Seton Hall’s 40% and 30%, respectively. The Wildcats also turned the ball over just 8 times to the Pirates’ 15, converting those into 19 points off turnovers. The Hall was also outrebounded 29-26 and were outscored in the paint 20-18.

The Hall, which fell into a tie for third place in the Big East with Creighton, returns home Wednesday night for the return game against Xavier in Newark, N.J. Xavier defeated the Pirates 74-54 in Cincinnati last month.

Dartmouth has time to appeal as athletes prep for union vote

Associated Press

The National Labor Relations Board on Monday granted Dartmouth's trustees extra time to request a review of a regional official's ruling that the school's men's basketball players are employees.

The official's ruling last week cleared the way for an election that could create the first labor union for NCAA athletes.

The labor relations board's national office granted Dartmouth's request to move the appeal deadline from Feb. 20 to March 5, which is the same day the players are scheduled to participate in an in-person election at the school's Hanover, New Hampshire, campus.

All 15 members of Dartmouth's basketball team signed the initial petition asking to be represented by the Service Employees International Union, which already represents some Dartmouth workers. One of the players, Romeo Myrthil, said Saturday following the team's 77-59 loss to Harvard that he had no reason to expect anything different when the players vote.

The NCAA has long maintained players are "student-athletes" -- a term created to emphasize that education comes first. But the labor relations board's regional director in Boston ruled Feb. 5 that the players were in effect employees of the school.

The outcome of the case could have wide-ranging implications for the definition of amateurism in college athletics.

In a previous case involving the Northwestern football team, the labor relations board overturned a regional official's similar ruling on a technicality that doesn't apply in the Dartmouth case.

The Hall set the tone early in a 26-12 first quarter and never looked back. The Pirates clobbered Xavier on the boards, 40-to-24 and shot 49.2 percent from the floor for the game. They were also a season-best 20-for-21 (.952) from the free-throw line.

Catalon turned in her best performance as a collegian, collecting 21 points, four rebounds and six assists, all career highs. She was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw line.

Three other Pirates also scored in double-figures. Micah Gray (Oklahoma City, Okla.) had 16 points on the strength of four made three-pointers. Azana Baines (Blackwood, N.J.) had 12 points, three steals and two blocks, while Kae Satterfield (New York, N.Y.) tallied 10 points and seven rebounds.

Seton Hall All-Time vs. the Red Storm: St. John's leads, 49-39
2023-24 Meetings:
Seton Hall 74, St. John's 66 in OT (F) – January 22, 2024 (Walsh Gymnasium)

AGAINST ST. JOHN'S
Seton Hall and St. John's will resume their long rivalry on Tuesday. The Red Storm own a 49-39 all-time series lead, but the Pirates have won six of the last seven games, including the last four. Earlier this year, The Hall outlasted St. John's, 74-66, in overtime. The Hall is 13-26 all-time at Carnesecca Arena, but has won two of the last three meetings there.

FIRST MEETING THIS YEAR
Three Pirates scored at least 16 points and the Seton Hall women's basketball team outlasted St. John's, 74-66, in overtime before a raucous Walsh Gym crowd on January 22.

St. John's forced the extra session with a late run and a game-tying three-pointer with only 34 seconds left. In overtime, however, the Pirates upped their intensity and got a pair of three-point plays from Azana Baines (Blackwood, N.J.) and Micah Gray (Oklahoma City, Okla.) before a massive three-pointer by Sha'Lynn Hagans (Manassas, Va.) to pull away from the Red Storm.

Baines started slow, but finished with team-highs of 17 points and 13 rebounds. Both Gray and Kae Satterfield (New York, N.Y.) had 16 points, while Hagans had a season-high 10 points off the bench.

Senior Amari Wright (Jacksonville, Fla.) had another strong game at the point with six points and game-highs of 10 assists and four steals.

SCOUTING ST. JOHN'S
St. John's was picked to finish sixth in the BIG EAST this season according to the preseason coaches' poll. Unique Drake was an All-BIG EAST Preseason Honorable Mention.

The Red Storm enter Tuesday's matchup with a 14-11 overall record and an 8-5 mark in BIG EAST Conference play. After falling in overtime to Seton Hall on Jan. 22, St. John's won three in a row, but has dropped their last two contests. The Red Storm are coming off a 64-59 loss at Butler on Friday. Drake leads the team and ranks third in the BIG EAST in scoring with 18.7 points per game. Jillian Archer is logging 11.6 and a team-best 7.4 rebounds per contest.

UP NEXT
Seton Hall will return to action on Saturday, February 17 when it returns to historic Walsh Gymnasium to host BIG EAST rival DePaul. Tip time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET. The contest will be streamed by the BIG EAST Digital Network and available for FloHoops subscribers with Matt Ambrose and Phil Stern on the call.
