It's time to make these handshake lines optional

Myron Medcalf, ESPN Staff Writer

We've had a conversation about the value of handshake lines for years. Every time there is a problem after a game, we begin to question their purpose.

As we should.

On Wednesday, the Southland Conference announced the suspensions of eight players from Incarnate Word and Texas A&M-Commerce after their postgame melee that began -- obviously -- in the handshake line.

The line itself isn't necessarily the problem, but collegiate sports could learn from the pros by not forcing athletes to shake hands after an emotional matchup. It should always be optional. That's one way to help avoid some of the postgame drama we've witnessed in recent years.

For 40 minutes, players battle in contentious games. Compelling them to shake hands has always been a risky move. It's time to make these handshake lines optional.

The So Important Butler Game

Some would call this a Must game and others might not. Without question Seton Hall needs this one. No excuses and the crowd including the students better be dialed in. Butler is desperate and dangerous. They are well coached and have a good deal of talent. Their starting five are all capable of putting up strong point production. They certainly bring a certain confidence with them on the road.

The good news is that they haven't really put up a huge number of points in their road games, usually in the 60's especially during conference play. The only deviation was the upset at Creighton, where they put up 99 in a perfect offensive game on a college level. They also had 75 at Providence, but that was an OT game.

For Seton Hall they must play one of their top-notch defensive games. Aside from Rutgers at home and the Providence game the team puts up surprisingly nice numbers at home. So, if they can just be on par offensively and play a Sha expected level of defense, The Hall should be OK. Every team puts up around 10 three point made shots against SHU, but they have been able to overcome that at least at home. The key is to keep Butler off the line, that's very important this time. Khadary just needs to lead and doesn't have to overdo it. Dawes is 13 for his last 28 from three (46%) Hopefully, Addae-Wusu can somehow get back on track. He's 4 for his last 31 from three (13%). He is helping out in other ways though. Davis and Bediako play well at The Rock. The bench players also seem to relax at home. So, Coleman, EHE and Sanders must add to the equation on Saturday night. Get this one, take two shots on the road for marquee wins and then it's time to settle the score with Villanova.

Atlanta, Ga. --Danny Melnick (Hamilton, N.J.) went 4-for-5 with three RBI, two doubles and a home run and Daniel Frontera (Red Bank, N.J.) picked up his first win of the season following six strong innings as the offense for the Seton Hall baseball team scored a season-high 14 runs in a 14-5 win over Georgia State on Friday afternoon.

Melnick's home run was one of four on the day for the Pirates (3-1). Kevin Milewski (Wallingford, Conn.) and Aiden Robbins (Yardley, Pa.) both hit their first collegiate home runs and Zack Sylvester (Montville, N.J.) got the scoring started with a two-run home run in the top of the first.

How It Happened

After Sylvester's home run in the top of the first, Robbins followed with a two-run shot of his own in the top of the second that extended Seton Hall's lead to 4-0. An RBI double for Melnick in the top of the third made it 5-0 Pirates as Frontera worked his second 1-2-3 inning of the ballgame in the home half of the third.

Milewski's first career jack led off the top of the fourth before the Panthers got on the board in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly that made it 6-1 Pirates. The floodgates opened in the top of the fifth where The Hall pushed across six runs, including one on a sac fly by Pat D'Amico (Lynnfield, Mass.) and a two-run base hit off the bat of Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.). Despite allowing three runs in the next two frames, Frontera settled and got out of trouble in the bottom of the sixth with the Pirates leading by a score of 12-4.

Melnick fittingly drove in the final Seton Hall runs of the game on a two-run blast in the top of the eighth that made it 14-4. After Georgia State pushed a run across in the eighth that made it 14-5, Colin Dowlen (Middletown, N.J.) closed the door with a perfect ninth inning that featured a strikeout for the third out.

Inside The Box Score
  • Melnick's four hits is a career high and he now has 23 career multi-hit games.
  • Sylvester has now hit seven career home runs.
  • Robbins' first career home run was also part of his first career multi-hit game.
  • Staus Pokrovsky (Pittsgrove, N.J.) crossed the plate three times, a career high.

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Seton Hall women's volleyball head coach Shannon Thompson announced today the hiring of Jacob Vander Beek as the Pirates' new assistant coach.

"I am delighted to have Jacob joining our staff and Seton Hall family," Thompson said. "His high volleyball IQ and vast playing experience will help propel our team into the next era of Seton Hall volleyball. He is a gritty, determined and highly-motivated individual who will bring his knowledge into all aspects of our program. He will be a great role model for our student athletes, and I am thrilled for him to be working with our team and staff."

Vander Beek switches coasts after establishing himself as a talented coach and professional volleyball player in California for the prior 15 years. On the sidelines, he has spent the last year as an assistant coach for both indoor and beach volleyball at Fullerton College. At Fullerton, Vander Beek immersed himself in film study, player recruitment and student-athlete development. Before landing at Fullerton, he helped lead Canyon High School to the league championship as its varsity assistant coach and junior varsity head coach.

As a player, Vander Beek continues to excel on the professional volleyball circuit as an outside hitter for the Las Vegas Ramblers. He also went overseas for a stint with the Team Durham Palatinates in England, leading them to their first-ever Premier League championship.

A 2020 graduate of Westcliff University in Irving, Calif., Vander Beek was a First Team All-Cal Pac selection and president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Trump won't Protect NATO

In what has to be one of the most reckless statements, Trump stated the following:

"If we don't pay and we're attacked by Russia, will you protect us?" Trump recalled another country's leader asking while him while he was president. "No, I would not protect you. In fact, I would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want."

This is inexcusable. Yet, I am sure we will have people some how try to defend it.
