Pirates Selected for WBIT; Face Saint Joe's Thursday

Bracket

The Hall will head to Philadelphia to face the Hawks for a second-straight postseason.
INDIANAPOLIS – The Seton Hall women's basketball team has been invited to participate in the 2024 Women's Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT). The Pirates will face Saint Joseph's in the first round of the event on Thursday, March 21 in Philadelphia.

Should Seton Hall advance past the Hawks, the Pirates will face the winner of the game between California and Hawaii in round two. The location and date for that contest is TBD.

WBIT committee seeded only the top half of the 32-team field. The remaining 16 teams were placed into the bracket by the WBIT Committee as close to their area of natural interest as possible. The 2024 semifinals and championship will be played at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, Ind.

Preliminary WBIT games are being televised on ESPN+, while the semifinals will be on ESPNU, and the finals will be on ESPN2. Additional WBIT information can be found on ncaa.com/WBIT.

This will be the second-consecutive year that The Hall is facing Saint Joseph's in the first round of the postseason. Last year, the Pirates hosted the Hawks in the first round of the WNIT in Walsh Gym, which resulted in a 69-61 victory for Seton Hall.

This is the inaugural WBIT event and the third consecutive season playing in the postseason for the Pirates. The Hall has now played in the postseason during eight of 11 seasons with Anthony Bozzella at the helm. Of the three seasons they didn't compete in postseason play, the 2020 postseason was canceled and the Pirates declined a WNIT invitation in 2021, both due to COVID concerns.

Stats

South Orange, N.J. - Four Pirates posted multi-RBI performances as the Seton Hall baseball team took care of NJIT at home on Wednesday afternoon by a final score of 13-5.

How it Happened

The Pirates got right to work in the first inning, bringing four runs across the plate. Max Viera (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) worked a walk to open the game, and eventually worked his way around to third base. He would come in to score on a wild pitch to give the Pirates the first run of the day. Two batters later, Cole Zak (Cleveland, Ohio) plated The Hall's second run with a groundout to first base which scored Danny Melnick (Hamilton, N.J.). Next, Staus Pokrovsky (Pittsgrove, N.J.) would take the first pitch he saw and drive it over the wall in left field for a two-run homer.

In the second, a sacrifice fly for Aiden Robbins (Yardley, Pa.) brought home the Pirates' fifth run. Next inning, the Pirates would erupt and put the game away for good, scoring seven times to increase their lead. Frankie Scrivanic (Tinton Falls, N.J.) brought in the first tally of the frame with an opposite field RBI single, followed soon after by a wild pitch which allowed Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.) to score. Viera would then leg out an infield single to bring home the eighth Pirate run and force an NJIT pitching change.

A new pitcher would not deter Seton Hall's offense, as Robbins promptly ripped a two-run double to right center to give the Pirates a 10-0 edge. Two batters later, Zak singled back up the middle to bring home the Pirates' 11th run of the day, and later Scravanic worked a bases loaded walk to bring in the seventh run of the inning.

All of NJIT's damage on offense came in the fifth inning. After back-to-back walks to open the inning, a sacrifice fly from Cole Fleming got the Highlanders on the board. Later in the inning, Cade Ladehoff would launch a grand slam to left field to make it a 12-5 game halfway through the contest.

The Pirates would get one run back in the bottom of the fifth, as Luders laced a grounder off the foot of the pitcher which allowed Zak to come in and score from third.

Pitching ruled the final four innings for the Pirates. Alex D'Ambrosio (Marlboro, N.J.) worked around two baserunners reaching in the sixth to toss a scoreless frame, followed by a clean seventh. Joey Calabretti (Perkasie, Pa.) and Colin Dowlen (Middletown, N.J.) got the final six outs for the Pirates, tossing scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth, respectively.

Inside the Box Score
  • Pokrovsky's home run was his fifth so far this season
  • Pokrovsky, Scravanic and Zak each drove in a pair of runs, while Robbins posted a three-RBI day
  • D'Ambrosio earned his first career victory, working 2.1 scoreless innings and allowing just two hits
  • Jayson Torres (East Islip, N.Y.) got the start for The Hall, pitching the first 4.2 innings and striking out four

Seton Hall Responds To NCAA Tournament Snub W/ OT NIT Win

Despondent and dejected after the NCAA tournament selection committee snubbed them from an opportunity in the big Dance, Seton Hall, led by its five seniors, gathered and decided their season was not finished – opting to compete in the National Invitational Tournament as the top seed.

“When these guys decided to, said they wanted to play, I was a little hesitant because when you have a big letdown like they had the other night not getting in [to the NCAA Tournament] we all thought we were, we thought we did enough to. As a parent, it’s like I’ve got 16 little brothers and 16 kids there, and they’re all looking to me for an answer, and I don’t know what to say,” Head Coach Shaheen Holloway
said after the game.

While Holloway may not have come up with the right words to console his players through their March sadness, he was able to get the message through to his team that Seton Hall plays for keeps and their
opening round matchup with Saint Joseph’s was going to be a real challenge as the Hawks entered hungry after coming up just short in forcing their way into the NCAA Tournament as the nine-seed in the
Atlantic 10 conference tournament.

“I was trying to warn them how good St. Joe’s is. I saw that draw and I was like, oh, goodness. We’re playing a really good team that could shoot the basketball, and we’ve gotta, the next two days, we gotta
do something. We’ve gotta get our thing back, whatever that thing is, because you can’t play like this and expect to win. Teams are too good. But I thought we did enough to win,” Holloway said.

The Pirates dug deep and used a seldom-used lineup to gain the advantage on their way to knocking off Saint Joseph’s 75-72 for a thrilling overtime win in front of a sold-out crowd in the opening round NIT
game at historic Walsh Gymnasium.

“We wanted to play. Despite what happened on that day [selection Sunday], we just wanted to play. We made that decision collectively. One game down, another one to play,” said graduate guard Al-Amir Dawes, who led Seton Hall in scoring by matching career-bests with 26 points on six made three-pointers and 10 rebounds. He also recorded three assists, two steals and a block in the winning effort.

Dawes rose to the occasion when Seton Hall needed most, especially late, hitting a game-tying three pointer with 31 seconds left in regulation to stop a 10-0 St. Joe’s run before later connecting on the go-
ahead three pointer in overtime, which proved to be the game-winner.

“The first one’s always the hard one, especially after a mental and physical letdown like not getting in the tournament. Now hopefully, they’ll get back to being Seton Hall ... I’ve been trying everything to pick
them up, but now, hopefully this will make them feel a little better about themselves and then we’ll get a couple days to prepare for a good team,” Holloway said.

The Hall will return to action Saturday at Walsh Gymnasium when they host defending NIT Champions North Texas, who defeated LSU 84-77 Tuesday evening. “I didn’t watch them play yet. Tonight, I will. I’ll have the answer tomorrow or maybe Friday ... I don’t know anything about them, but I know basketball, right? And basketball, scouting’s important, but coming to play is even more important. So obviously, I’ll get a feel for them the next couple days and then see what happens,” Holloway said about his preparation for the Pirates’ second round opponent.

Coming to play will be an obvious message for Seton Hall in preparing for the Mean Green as the Pirates did not come out with the edge needed against St. Joseph’s, trailing for a large portion of the first half
before entering the halftime down 40-37.

Graduate center Jaden Bediako was hampered by foul trouble for much of the night, particularly after picking up his third foul just 16 seconds into the second half, and The Hall found itself reeling as they
trailed 52-46 with just over 13 minutes remaining.

The Pirates got the wind back in their sails by going small with senior wing Dre Davis manning the center position, while seniors Kadary Richmond and Dylan Addae-Wusu served as the forwards and Dawes and freshman Isaiah Coleman played in the backcourt.

The small-ball lineup forced four turnovers over the next five minutes of gametime and the Pirates regained the lead 57-54 on a three from Dawes with just over eight minutes to go in the game.

“[The small lineup] It was good. It was us, it was Seton Hall. We played with energy, we played with passion. I thought Dylan played great, he got some deflections, he got some steals and he got us back
going,” Holloway said.

Seton Hall extended its lead to 65-58 with three minutes to go after Dawes corralled a defensive rebound and passed it ahead to Addae-Wusu for a slam, but St. Joseph’s would not go away quietly.

The Hawks connected on three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to close the score to 65-64 with a little over two minutes remaining and took a 68-65 lead with 41 ticks left in the game to put Seton Hall’s season on the ropes, that is before Dawes responded like a veteran potentially playing his final collegiate game at home and forced at least one more game in his career as a Pirate.

Seton Hall was paced by Addae-Wusu’s 18 points, six rebounds, three steals and one block, while Davis recorded double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds to go along with three blocks, two steals and an
assist.

Richmond had a quiet night to his standards with six points, six rebounds, five assists, four steals and a block, while Bediako chipped in six points and three rebounds in just 20 minutes of action.

“The future is now. You’ve gotta be able to do both. It is what it is, right? These guys want to play, me and my coaches have to do our job as far as the portal stuff, but the future is now. The future is trying to
make this team and trying to win the NIT,” Holloway said, on balancing the current team’s NIT run with the offseason.

How It Happened

Addae-Wusu started the game off hot as his first two three-pointers gave Seton Hall its first lead of the game, 8-5, at the 17:18 mark in the first half. The Hawks' lead grew to five, 26-21, with 5:36 left before halftime but another trey by Addae-Wusu cut the Pirates' deficit to two, 26-24. After a layup by Elijah Hutchins-Everett (Orange, N.J.) at the 2:54 mark that tied up the score at 30-30, the Hawks used a 7-0 run to take a 37-30 lead. The Hall answered with a 7-3 spurt to close the half that made it a three-point game, 40-37.

Saint Joe's scored the first points of the second stanza as its lead ballooned to eight, 46-38. It was still an eight point game with just over 14 minutes left to play when the Pirates used a 15-2 run that was sparked by their defense to take a five-point lead, 59-54, their largest of the game to that point. The Hawks trimmed their deficit to three at the 4:35 mark in the second half when Richmond drove through the lane and was fouled before the final media timeout. He sank both free throws after the timeout and the Pirates got a defensive stop on the other end. Dawes corralled the rebound and found Addae-Wusu on the fastbreak, who converted a right-handed dunk that gave Seton Hall its largest lead at 65-58 with 3:03 left.

The Hawks wouldn't go away however as they answered the dunk with a three-point trey that kicked off a 10-0 run, making 68-65 Saint Joe's with 41 seconds left. After a Seton Hall timeout, a play was drawn up to get Dawes open at the top of the key. The Pirates executed the play and Dawes sank his fifth trey of the evening that forced overtime.

Both sides traded baskets in the extra session but Dawes' sixth three-pointer of the game proved to the be the decisive blow that made it 75-72 Seton Hall with 48 seconds left. Saint Joseph's called a timeout on their next possession and it ended with a block on a three-point attempt by Kadary Richmond (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and a rebound by Dawes with 36 seconds left.
