  • Coming off of its first national postseason tournament victory since 2018, the Seton Hall men's basketball will host North Texas in the second round of the NIT inside historic Walsh Gymnasium on Saturday morning.
  • The two teams met once previously on Dec. 13, 1980, Bill Raftery's final season at The Hall, in the Cougar Classic in Provo, Utah when the Pirates defeated then-named North Texas State, 89-78.
  • The Pirates' 75-72 win over Saint Joseph's marked their first national postseason win since The Hall's 94-83 victory over NC State in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
  • Al-Amir Dawes turned in one of the best performances of his career as he tied career highs in points (26) and made threes (6), including the game-tying trey at the end of regulation and the go-ahead three-pointer in overtime that helped seal the win.
  • Seton Hall is 10-4 in games decided by 10 points or fewer this season.
  • The Pirates are 2-0 in Walsh Gym this season and 15-3 overall as the home team.

  • Seton Hall has only played three NIT games inside historic Walsh Gymnasium; Wednesday's win over Saint Joseph's and in 2011-12 when the Pirates defeated Stony Brook, 63-61, before falling to UMass, 77-67.
  • Prior to their loss to the Minutemen in the NIT, the Pirates last defeat to a non-conference opponent in Walsh Gym was against Fordham on Dec. 16, 1989 (65-60).
  • Seton Hall has played in a national postseason tournament in seven of the last eight seasons (five NCAA, two NIT).
  • The Pirates are 9-19 all-time in NIT games and won the NIT championship in 1953.
  • Picked to finish ninth out of 11 teams in the BIG EAST preseason poll, head coach Shaheen Holloway led the Pirates to a fourth place finish and a 13-7 record in league play, tied for the second-most BIG EAST wins in program history.
  • Already the program's leader for BIG EAST wins and overall victories through two seasons, Holloway is the first Seton Hall head coach to lead the Pirates to postseason appearances in each of his first two seasons.
  • Kadary Richmond, who's one of two players in the BIG EAST (Devin Carter, PC) to rank in the top 11 in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals in league play, is one of 40 players named on the Oscar Robertson Trophy and All-America Watch List.
  • Richmond is tied for second in Division I with eight 20 point, 5 assist, 5 rebound games this season.

South Orange, N.J.
-- The freshmen led the way for the Seton Hall Pirates as they defeated the University of Massachusetts Minutemen in the first game of a three-game series, 7-2, at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Aiden Robbins (Yardley, Pa.) had another multi-hit game, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and Frankie Scravanic (Tinton Falls, N.J.) added an RBI himself, going 2-for-4. Alex Nicolosi (Stony Point, N.Y.) picked up his third win of the season after pitching three innings in relief.

How It Happened

The Minutemen were the first to get on the board. Kevin Skagerlind led off the game with a walk and reached third base after smart base running. Daniel Frontera (Red Bank, N.J.) struck the next batter but a passed ball allowed Skagerlind to score. Massachusetts led 1-0.

The Pirates responded in the next inning. Danny Melnick (Hamilton, N.J.) singled with two outs to keep the inning alive. After a Zack Sylvester (Montville, N.J.) hit by pitch, Cole Zak (Cleveland, Ohio) ripped one over the second baseman to bring Melnick home.

In the next inning, the Pirates carried their momentum. Four of their first six batters recorded hits. Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.) got things going with a single. Kyle Lyons (West Chester, Pa.) brought him home to give the Pirates a lead they would never relinquish. With two runners on, Robbins roped one into the right-center gap and recorded a two-RBI triple. Pirates led 4-1.

After two innings of work, Nicolosi came in relief for Frontera. In his first inning of work, he retired the side. Scravanic added another run with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning.

In the fourth inning, Robbins and Sylvester were in scoring position with two outs. Staus Pokrovsky (Pittsgrove, N.J.) hit a single down the middle to bring them both home and extend Seton Hall's lead to 7-1.

The Minutemen cut into the deficit in the fifth inning with a bases loaded walk with two outs. Nicolosi was able to retire the next batter to keep it a five-run game.

The Pirates' bullpen was able to shut out the Minutemen in the remaining four innings. Jay Allmer (Cary, N.C.) was able to get out of back-to-back jams in the eighth and ninth innings to seal the deal.

Inside the Box Score

  • Robbins has recorded three triples in his last five games
  • Scranvic is 5-for-9 with four RBI in his last three games played
  • Lyons and Zak have four-game hit streaks
  • Today was the fifth game this season where the Pirates struck out 14-plus batters

5th Covid Year

There is no doubt that the 5th year given has significantly changed the landscape the last few years. The extra year has driving up NIL spend, and given an advantage to team which have the older players. The physical difference between an 18 year and 24 year is massive. (see Kentucky yesterday), and it has effected March Madness.

Very interesting to see after this expires if its will help stabilize NIL spend, cure some of the portal nonsense (underclassmen wont get squeezed), and change back the competitive landscape. Or conversely nothing will change.

What does everything think? Will it help or hurt the Hall?
