Dr. Fauci gives grim projection

The difficult thing is that the virus is going to spread in schools. They are coming up with plans they hope will work, but kids are going to get infected.

What is the plan when that happens? Obviously, quarantine those infected, but if they were in class, do you quarantine the entire class? The teacher? Are they just going to shut them down again?

We are planning to do 100% remote for a bunch of reasons... but I don’t envy Murphy here at all. If schools are open, more people will die. Easy to sit back and say it’s an acceptable number of death... but I’m not sure I could sleep well ever again after making that decision.
Stop with the more people will die, that is just a scare tactic. Their is risk in everything. Do the teachers, students and staff not go out of their houses currently? They go to beach, parties, shopping, day camps, vacations, amusement parks? Were there any huge outbreaks attributed to schools when virus was running rampant in March and no social distancing, checks or masks were being worn? I do not recall any.

It seems many district are going to go hybrid, so most kids will probably only be in school 2-3 days a week. If their is an outbreak, then school should follow their plan, which I assume if numbers are high enough a class or whole school might have to be closed and home school for a period. I am not against closing schools, just against closing schools just to close them for no reason.

By way I have two children in grammar school.

Not at all especially with all of the rules set up so far. No lunch or recess. Can’t really play together. Etc.. We already have plans set up to see other kids for our own “recess” on certain days.

Opening schools will cause more death. Not a scare tactic. Maybe it’s a kid, a parent, a teacher, a grandparent, a caretaker.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t open schools. We should.

I’m just saying I’m not sure how high that number would have to get to take an extreme toll on me if I was the one making the decision.

As far as outbreaks from schools. I have no idea. We weren’t really testing back then. we don’t have a good understanding of that yet.

I would never tell anybody how to raise their kids, but I think you were taking an extreme position here. This virus is clearly not a death sentence especially for children. Unless your children are restricted to only being at home, it is almost impossible to prevent them from getting it.

we are lucky and that our children are grown, but I would opt to send them to school use common sense and follow the CDC guidelines.

High schoolers can still spread the virus to teachers and the teachers can spread the virus to their lived ones, no?

I think most schools districts plans are going to go with some type of hybrid model, but teachers and union pushing hard to go only distance, so my thought is Murphy will cave and year will at least start all distance.

Murphy is one of the most spineless people I've ever seen, and that's saying something when talking about politicians. I'll be shocked if he doesn't cave.

He will cave. Teachers union and Political interest groups that will push for a school closure and closing the NJ economy.

Well said. This whole thing has been a scare tactic for the most part, especially regarding schools. Kids are not at much risk at all.

This is what happens when you raise a generation of softies. They (and their parents) can't handle any adversity. People think they can wrap their kids in bubbles and eliminate all risk. That just isn't the case. Just look at how few kids wait at bus stops these days. When I went to school, we stood at the bus stop every day. I was rarely ever driven to school. Now you see convoys of cars at every school every single morning. That's just one example.

The "everyone gets a trophy" generation has now become parents and it's scary. Kids today just sit in front of the computer or cell phone screen all day. They don't go outside and play in the yard, play sports on the cul-de-sac or anything like that. It's sad to see. I didn't get a cell phone until I was 17 years old.

Feel you are off base...i am 5 to 6 years older than you and i certainly didnt grow up in a participation trophy era and i played baseball basketball pre high school and then another sport in high school.
I do think teachers from mid 40s to 60s are at risk live. There isnt exactly rosters of seasoned teachers waiting on the side.
As tech advances it gives distractions to people that they didnt have before. So kids are less out doors. Maybe the parents shouldnt be giving sub 18 year olds any more devices than they need for school.
I didnt have a cell until frosh year at SHU.
Why are you so worried about the bussing thing for kids?

Anyone can spread it to anyone. You’re advocating complete isolation. Don’t agree with that.

Which is about the number of people that die EVERY year only in THIS country from heart disease.

so now 694,000 people are dying from heart disease in america every year, and on top of that we have 154,000 dead americans from covid. seems bad!

I'm happy I can help you understand numbers....

I'm not arguing for complete isolation, but lets be real...
A crowded room, with poor ventilation over a long period of time is not exactly an ideal place to be if you don't want to get infected.

Schools will likely cause a lot of infection. Maybe that is ok if the goal is herd immunity among the young and we accept the few deaths due to the virus... but we should be honest about it.

Personally, I think that is an over-reaction as I would guess those kids are out in public in open/closed spaces coming into contact with people every day. We also have to weigh the risks from staying at home.

Any teacher that doesn't show up in September should be fired and never allowed to teach anywhere ever again.

It will be virtual learning anyway. I agree with you though.

Just sad on here that posters don't realize the direction we are going. Its all politics all the time.

I'm not arguing schools should be closed. It is possible some kids will return with immunity from picking it up at some point already. I don't think we can quantify that yet though. I just think opening schools is an argument towards building herd immunity. Maybe that is the right call but I don' think we should be fooling ourselves if we think that any of the steps they are taking will prevent the spread. I'd rather they just skip the hybrid plans and skip the masks. They will accomplish little when sitting in one room with poor ventilation for hours.

Pyschoman at it again, you can not just get up and rid people part of a union. You wouldn't understand because you are in a field of work that does not have one. Easier to fire you at your job than teacher in a district.

Hi @Merge. As I have been saying NJ school will not be opening in September. This is all political.

What percentage of teachers in NJ have at least one comorbidity risk?

If I am the head of the teachers union, I am arguing against opening. If you are in charge of representing the safety of teachers, it is a pretty easy argument.

That said, I do not expect Murphy to close schools because the parents that want schools open would be a much bigger political problem for him.

Speaking of Murphy, what is with him calling people "knuckleheads"? Does he think insulting the electorate is a good idea?

Nope. Governor Murphy will close the schools. As I have said the teachers union has his ear.

And the board's chief name caller (outside of your buddy BS) is at it again.

I watched an interesting interview on PBS. It was a doctor from the WHO. He was pretty much stressing my main points. This doctor was stressing the United States will be on a "Rocky road" for the next 4 to 5 years. He predicted that no one will be at sporting events for the next 2 to 3 years. Even with a vaccine. A very very dark time for this country. I've been saying this for a long time that we are far out of the woods. It will take years.

And the board's chief name caller (outside of your buddy BS) is at it again.

I see he never responds when he's called for his name calling. He STILL hasn't answered why he's using derogatory slogans against American Indians AND his buddy BS is liking the posts. It's absurd when you think these guys rail against how racist people are but them casually say overtly derogatory stuff.

World population: 7.8 billion

0.008% of the world population has died from this. Somehow, I think we'll be ok.

what is the percent of the world population dying that is the line between OK and NOT OK?

100% agree with you. Another example is @donnie_baseball. He name calls me all the time. Not nice at all. But I always stand the higher ground!

It's a pandemic. It's nice to hope and pray that nobody dies, but that isn't how the field of infectious disease works, unfortunately.

I think we all understand that.

I think the disconnect is that no one is saying we won't be ok.
We will be ok. Our country will be ok.

Some just say we should be taking it more seriously than others.
That's why I usually try to quantify what people are talking about when they downplay the risk.

nobody ever answers this question. they'll tell you that the current number is not high enough to stop doing stuff, but they never have a number of dead where we SHOULD stop doing stuff. funny how that works

I highly disagree. Our country will not be ok. With the state level mask mandates that will never disappear after COVID and the shutdowns. Our government officials will now use those events as precedent for future shut downs. The government will continue to tell us what to do.

Because that goal post will move too quickly.

Ridiculous for many reasons.
