Researching viruses for the purpose of improving the health of our citizens is clearly a good thing. No one would argue with that.
I think the rub is picking China as a partner. This is a country that is currently operating concentration camps. Their track record on human rights is abhorrent.
Taking China on face value on anything is folly.
As I posted before, I'll take Churchill over Chamberlain any day.
We weren’t picking them as a partner just because though. The bats are in Wuhan. There has to be some agreement between our countries if we want to research there.
And who says we were taking anything from China at face value? We weren’t paying them for their research. We paid a US company to do their own research in Wuhan.
You don't have be near the cave to do the research. I am sure most of the scientist never went into the cave.

I don't know. Who do you have in mind? I did not say we did or didn't. You inferred that. That notwithstanding, if we had asked them where the results of this research might be used, i.e. would results be used for bio weapons etc, and they said no, I would not take that necessarily as being true.

China is our greatest global threat AND they have proven time and again to be untrustworthy. We should have a long game strategy to keep them at arms length and become less dependent. That is something that shouldn’t be even debatable.
I didn’t infer any trust at all.
We went to China because that’s where there are hundreds of Coronaviruses. We went to Saudi Arabia after SARS, we went to South America after Zika...etc.
You don’t have to have trust in the government to do research. It was a US company doing their own research and they are currently operating in 30 countries.
you do have to trust the company. china had a vaccine ready to go, china absolutely used this move to move forward as an authoritative superpower in an attempt to eliminate threats, wipe out competitions, accumulate land/resources, and china knew how we were preparing to build our vaccines and the direct method of action. they were observing our response which will help them next time they release a virus. we just gave them a open door to 50% of americans on how to put them on their ass. ever notice how china and russia made vaccines that arent mRNA? wonder why japan isnt vaccinating?
sounds crazy right? china would never do that right? oh wait. china plans in centuries.
I’m not dismissing the possibility of China being a bad actor. I’m just saying that of course it makes sense that the United States would want to research viruses in Wuhan.

China is developing their own mRNA vaccine as well. Just not done yet.
Japan got off to a slow start because they thought they would have their own vaccine available. They didn’t buy any from other companies like other countries did. They didn’t have supply. Number of shots increasing rapidly now. They went from 2.5% of their population being vaccinated to 10.5 in the last month.
not sure I buy into the trial run theory considering how effective the mRNA vaccines are and how we will be able to sequence a future genome and modify the vaccine and develop them even faster next time something like this happens. Possible, but why would they be giving us an opportunity to prepare and see what works and what doesn’t?
Do you have any references you can point to that states that the virus originated with the bats.
I was just talking to a colleague who said he believes the bats were infected with the virus which was created somewhere else.
I wasn’t saying this virus was from a bat. I don’t think we have a definitive answer there yet.
I said that EcoHealth was awarded a grant to study bats in Wuhan because of the significant amount of Cornoaviruses which exist in bats in Wuhan.

I don’t need more facts. The fact is that a private company was awarded a grant to study Coronaviruses in bats years ago. That company has been in many countries studying infectious diseases for decades.
You guys make it seem like we went in blind and handed China the keys to everything we know. In reality, none of us know nearly enough about the research taking place and what was shared with China and what wasn’t.
All I am saying is that, of course we would want researchers in China. Also of course we shouldn’t take China at their word which is why we want people on the ground there that we trust.
