Seton Hall entered Tuesday evening’s matchup against St. John’s as home underdogs despite winning four straight, seven of their last eight and receiving more votes in the most recent Associated Press Top 25 poll – ranking 28th versus 36th for their local rival.
That did not matter one bit as Seton Hall (13-5, 6-1) played with a chip on its shoulder and emerged victorious, dominating St. John’s (12-6, 4-3) from start to finish, 80-65, in front of 9,204 fans at the Prudential Center.
With the win, the Pirates have won 19 of 21 home contests against the Johnnies dating back to 1998, including 13 of 14 at the Prudential Center since its opening in 2007.
The Hall jumped out to an early 6-0 advantage, holding St. John’s scoreless on 0/10 shooting from field in the first five minutes of the game, and extended the lead to 13-2 with 13 minutes remaining in the opening half.
The Red Storm, who were without hall of fame Head Coach Rick Pitino due to COVID, held the Pirates scoreless over the next four minutes to cut the deficit to 13-12. Daniss Jenkins knocked down a corner three with just over four minutes remaining in the half to knot the game up at 24-24 before Seton Hall went on a run to quite literally run away with the game.
“I know at the under four-minute timeout, I told our guys that we’ve got to go on a good run to make sure they don’t come back ... I said, let’s get three stops in a row, three scores. I thought we did that and then it kind of carried over to the second half,” Head Coach Shaheen Holloway said, in the post-game presser.
The Pirates reeled off a 14-0 run to close the half with plenty of highlights to go around – a dunk from junior center Elijah Hutchins-Everett off the dish from senior guard Kadary Richmond, a steal from graduate guard Al-Amir Dawes that led to a pull-up three in transition, an offensive rebound from Hutchins-Everett that resulted in a corner three from senior guard Dylan Addae-Wusu to prompt a St. John’s timeout and a steal by Hutchins-Everett that led to a full court outlet pass from Wusu to senior forward Dre Davis for a layup in the closing seconds.
The Pirates kept the good times rolling to start the second half as they proceeded to reel off another 14-0 run in the first four minutes to take a commanding 52-24 lead, which they would not relinquish.
The second half run was sparked in large part by St. John’s transfer Addae-Wusu, who began the run by drilling a three that was assisted by graduate center Jaden Bediako. Addae-Wusu proceeded to assist on back-to-back threes by Hutchins-Everett and Dawes before beating his man back door for an and-one layup.
“He came out and played. He was ready, and I thought it was a carryover. I thought he had a good game at Butler, and I think he came in and kind of set the tone, got his hands on a lot of balls, scoring, driving to the basket, hitting threes,” Holloway said of Addae-Wusu after the game.
Seton Hall, which five players in double figures, was led by Dawes’ 21 points on 3/5 shooting from long distance, while Addae-Wusu notched a double-double scoring 16 points, securing 10 rebounds to go along with five assists.
Hutchins-Everett had his best performance as a Pirate, coming off the bench to record 14 points, including one triple, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal in 18 minutes of action.
“I’m happy for him. He’s been working really hard, he could shoot the basketball, we all knew that. When I say we all knew that, I mean the team knew that, he kind of worked at it. I’m happy with his defense and his rebounding. Once you do that, everything else takes care of itself. He did that, he battled — especially [Joel] Soriano, one of the best bigs in the country,” Holloway said.
Richmond finished with 12 points, nine rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks, while Davis tallied 10 points, six rebounds and two steals.
“Kadary didn’t have a great game offensively, and then we come out and we still score 80 points. Dre had 10 and Kadary had 12, but other guys stepped up. That’s the sign of a team that’s trending in the right direction, and that’s kind of what I want to be happening. I’m happy that we were able to keep this team under a certain amount of points. That’s kind of who I am as a coach, a defensive coach,” Holloway said.
Seton Hall outrebounded St. John’s 49-28, recorded more second chance points 19 to 12 and led fast break points 10 to 4.
The home team, which is in sole possession of first place in the Big East until at least tomorrow evening when top ranked UConn plays 18th ranked Creighton, led for 38:50.
The Hall returns to action at home on Saturday when they host Creighton at noon.
