I can’t really predict what Murphy will do, but assuming we stay on this trend (and I believe we will) this will be essentially over (still spreading but very few hospitalizations and deaths) by June. I’d guess over but that’s probably pretty close.

As Dr Osterholm stated, its officially a race against the variant vs the vaccinations. But unfortunately the US is on the brink of the UK variant surge.

There will not be another surge. That variant may just become the predominant one people get infected with if they get infected.
Fauci and Osterholm are correct that now is not the time to let our guard down. If we take the threat seriously, there will be over soon. If we don't, then it may extend longer. That's really all they are saying.

Your take is fair and balanced here. Although I'm not sure I agree about the motives of Fauci and Osterholm.
This is all just very self fulfilling. If the public takes the risks more seriously, it will have less of an impact. If the public takes it less seriously, it will have more of an impact.
In my opinion, the motives of Fauci and Osterholm are to present worst case outlooks so people will tend to continue to take precautions now instead of looking at the trends and thinking that it is over now. We're very close, just not quite there yet.

See latest guidance from the CDC below on how fully vaccinated people can gather. Based on the comments section of this tweet, many people are saying they will be wearing masks even fully vaccinated way after the pandemic is over. Once person mentioned the face that they didn't get a cold this year. And they will be wearing a mask going forward because of that.
I still don't know what the exact intention of Fauci and Osterholm is. But I don't trust the government. I still don't think we will have the freedoms before the pandemic. Example- Covid passports. Government will now know our exact location, travel whereabouts, etc. I am also concerned about universal mask wearing as well.

My guess as to why the number of curranty hospitalized isn't falling as quickly right now is that there are probably some people with longer stays who are in more critical condition.
As long as the number of new hospitalizations doesn't spike, we are still in good shape.
And almost 3 million vaccinated in NJ now. We are in great shape.

Yes, there is evidence that these are excess deaths well above what we have seen in prior years and are absolutely attributable to Covid.

I think it’s been a great, bright winter. We pushed out a vax. Needless deaths because of improper ventilators have been avoided. Btw the number is more like 250 but it’s still not dark thanks to my second and third sentences.
