Miles Robinson’s thrilling goal gives USMNT upset of Mexico in Gold Cup final

By Associated Press

LAS VEGAS — Miles Robinson scored on a header in the 117th minute, and a United States junior varsity lineup upset a mostly front-line Mexico team 1-0 on Sunday night to win the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Kellyn Acosta, the only player in the U.S. lineup who gets playing time when the first-choice roster is together, took a free kick, and Robinson outjumped Edson Álvarez and headed the ball in on one hop to the right of goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera.

Robinson, a 24-year-old defender in his fourth Major League Soccer season with Atlanta, got his third international goal in nine international appearances, his second goal of the tournament.

Matt Turner got his fifth shutout in six matches of the Gold Cup, the championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean.

The U.S. won its seventh Gold Cup title, its first since 2017, matching Mexico for the most in the 15 tournaments. Canada won in 2000. It was just the second victory for the Americans in seven finals against El Tri.

The U.S. has won nine consecutive games overall and 14 home games in a row.

Top players, who are with their clubs for European preseasons, will return when the U.S. opens World Cup qualifying at El Salvador on Sept. 2. Mexico starts at home that day against Jamaica.

Before an overwhelmingly pro-Mexico crowd, El Tri started seven of the 11 players who began the Nations League final that the U.S. won in extra time in June: defenders Luis Rodríguez, Néstor Araujo, Héctor Moreno and Jesús Gallardo plus midfielders Álvarez, Jesús Corona and Héctor Herrera. The newcomers were Talavera, midfielders Jonathan dos Santos and Orbelín Pineda, and forward Rogelio Funes Mori, starting in place of goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa plus Carlos Rodríguez, Uriel Antuna and Hirving Lozano.

The U.S. lineup that included nine players from Major League Soccer.

The field CONCACAF chose was 69 yards wide, narrower than the recommended 75 yards.

U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter made four changes from the lineup in the semifinal win over Qatar, inserting Cannon for Shaq Moore, Bello for Sam Vine, Williamson for Gianluca Busio and Zardes for Daryl Dike.

Defender Henry Kessler made his debut for the U.S. in extra time stoppage time.

Honest (uneducated) question. Is the US rising or is Mexico slipping? Just curious if we’re improving on the world stage outside North America.

We are improving…this was probably our C squad and they can do things our previous A squads couldn’t do.
If everyone stays healthy and a true striker emerges we can be a real threat in upcoming World Cups.

Being a Seton Hall fan, it’s just important that the A team is on par… depth is nice to have as we all know our backups would contend for the B-squad national championship!* Nice to hear our C-Team is rising, as long as that’s pushing the overall program higher.

*sarcasm alert*

Do countries send lower teams to the Olympics? Would Mexico’s top players be in that game or Tokyo?

It’s both… historically the Mexican team has a very fragile mental state when things don’t go exactly their way. When things are going good they are great. The fans have a party, the media in Mexico heap praise of the players and coaches. When it isn’t going great like now, the fans get on them real bad, the media is non stop in criticism of player and coaches. The players feed off that criticism and they feel the pressure and it shows in their play and it shows in the coaches coaching.

Also right now the USMNT is on the rise. Probably the most depth and talent I’ve seen. In years past you would have a handful of that of players playing in some of the biggest European leagues. Now you have the proffered starting 11 almost all playing at high level European leagues, and high level teams at that.

My reaction to when I 1st saw the US roster

Great exposure for a lot of youngsters. Carry that towards the next World Cup

Our A squad also just beat Mexico for another trophy earlier in the summer so Mexico is currently hurting from back to back losses ny their arch rival. Like hallsoccer03 said...they are very mentally fragile so when you get Mexico on the ropes you can take them down...which is what our C team did to their A team.

I would say that was our B/B+ squad earlier which is saying even more.

The Mexico fans and media act like it’s their birthright to win any trophy and any match they are in. By any chance they do lose it’s not because the other team is just plain better, it’s because of the coach or because of the refs… Mexican fans still won’t shut up about the penalty Vs Netherlands, but never mention all the gifts CONCACAF refs give them… I despise Philly fans, but Mexican soccer fans are the absolute worst in all of sports

Most wouldn’t even say B… but you had players step up and play well… Robinson and Turner solidified roster spots on WCQ team… Hoppe is young. He has the talent, he has the drive, but he has to learn to make better decisions with the ball… Zardes is Zardes… I can’t knock him anymore, but plain and simple other strikers have more talent and composure on the ball…Dike has to be more consistent. Can’t show up one game and disappear the next.

the fifa world rankings come out tonight I believe… interesting to see where the usa is ranked, they won the 2 United Nations league games and then the 6 gold cup games and a friendly or 2 with no losses or draws…

Question is - how many of our players are Mexican? Is it possible that the better players are immigrating to the US?

I agree with the "bit of both" response. We're definitely improving both in terms of high end talent and depth, but last night's roster is still one that Mexico will feel they shouldn't have lost to. The most exciting part for US soccer is that the top talent is still very young and should have 2-3 world cup cycles in them.

I don’t think any players on the USMNT last night had any Mexican heritage. It’s honestly a big issue that the Mexican American players with dual national heritage that they feel the ussoccer is not doing enough to keep those players with the USMNT…

the USMNT is improving because years ago they started a better youth program through MLS, and those younger players now are moving to Europe. The training is getting better and the best players are moving over to Europe and getting better competition and training.
