Ron DeSanctimonious

If I were a democratic strategist, I would not touch DeSantis right now.
Just let Trump do it.

DeSantis may not even want to enter the race if Trump is there. Just enjoy his term as a very popular governor and run on that record in 6 years.
Agreed 100%. I don't have a "team", but when I read or here someone attack Desantis along the lines we saw a few posts above, it tells you everything about what is wrong with the country and our political process.

I agree, but they will be collecting anything they can in the meantime. He is a bigger threat than Trump.

Agree 100%.

Again, just thinking about the gamesmanship part here. A democrat strategists would want Trump to run against DeSantis and beat him up during the Primary and bully him on stage like he did everyone else last time and then beat Trump again in a general election. Trump is a MUCH weaker general election candidate than DeSantis. Not even close.

If the election were held today, I don't see a democrat that would beat DeSantis. I think there are are a handful that would beat Trump.

LOL...everything he is doing is setting himself up for 2024....i.e. his Biden moment after the hurricane.

That is true. He wants it, I don't doubt that for a second but he is going to play it safe for a while. He won't announce one way or the other any time soon. I'm honestly just not sure he will want to take the bruises from Trump though. If Trump is out of the picture, then he will be involved much earlier.

If the Republicans are smart (which I'm not completely sure), the other potential candidates would line up with DeSantis over the coming months and avoid the situation they had in 2020 with 17 people on the stage.

More and more people are disgusted that he's co-opting the party, so I don't see the widespread support that he had back then as a novelty.

I think most of the Democratic possibilities would beat him in a general election right now.

A lot of time between now and then, but as we are seeing more and more...these campaigns are multi-year events now.

Well you have to consider the source on those posts haha. Some folks are just hyper partisan and love to attack, especially when the person they're attacking did something well that the partisan individual railed against.

Beware of Florida because it’s an outlier. It has a big Cuban population which has always been Republican and now has more of the Venezuelan which are republicans as well. Do not confuse it for other Latino voters.

DeSantis is now the shiny new Bletchley but Larry Hogan and Sununu are much better candidates that are people who do not want to be a demigod.

Trump has already warned DeSantis that he will come out with everything on him if he runs.

I don’t know as much about Hogan or Sununu, only more generalized stuff. My impression without being a devoted follower isn’t that DeSantis wants to be a demigod. Certainly not any more than most politicians. He ain’t Trump, that’s for sure. Give me candidates from both parties that are smart, competent, and haven’t lost their minds. Shouldn’t be too much to ask.

I actually like Larry Hogan a lot. Common sense and action oriented. I think the whole DeSantis/Demigod is another silly partisan label.

Leading for my vote at the moment.

Kind of invited that with the "on the 8th day" ad.
Don’t know the ad. Didn’t Obama do stuff like that all the time when running the first time? I never viewed him as a demigod. Just typical politician stuff.

That label preceded the commercial, and we could label politicians all day with some of the themes they use.

He has that tough, outspoken, get-it-done personnna, but I agree that he needs to pivot and demonstrate his willingness to be fair and lead everyone. Embracing Biden during the hurricane relief efforts was a good example.

I'd watch the ad first.

I don't really recall stuff like that all the time from Obama.
I think you have to recognize that this is his ad for the Governor's race in Florida that is targeting a specific demographic. Besides a 30 second commercial, what has he actually done to deserve that label?

Lol, thanks. Just watched it. Over the top. Does it make me not like him? No. Politician stuff.

I think if that ad makes someone not like him they were never going to like him anyway.

Don't know. No one here has called him that prior to the video.
After the video, one person poked fun at him for it.

Yeah exactly. Not changing any opinions, a bit over the top and of course some people will poke fun at that and then forget about next week.

Well Trump can't help himself with a viscious attack on DeSantis tonight.

Desperate Donald. He's a sinking ship. This week backed him into a corner and now he's lashing out.

His ego cannot take it. Hillary won Miami-Dade by 30 points in 2016! Not 3. Freaking 30. And DeSantis just pulled off a double-digit W there.

You should pass along desperate Donald nickname to DeSantis. That’s a good one, hoping DeSantis doesn’t get on his level, but just in case he really needs it.

I agree. I think the best way to deal with Trump is to just ignore him. Trump does well when people try to take him on directly.

When asked, Desantis should just say he is undecided about the future but if the electorate doesn't see the type of leadership they deserve, he will consider it. Let Trump blow a gasket.

I never understood why all the Republican primary candidates tried to respond to him in 2020. Best to ignore the bully and don't even give him an opportunity to engage. I would do the same thing if I was DeSantis.

BTW, saw a piece on Casey DeSantis on NN last night. She is a definite asset and I mean that in the most complementary way.

I would take it even further, if he’s on the debate stage with Trump . He should openly acknowledge Trump helped him win in Florida, because he really did, plus let Trump know he could use his help again. The only way to beat him or diffuse him is too shower him with compliments and acknowledge his fighting spirit. Tell him with his help I’m going to take it from here. Guys like Trump need to be coaxed into leaving. The ego needs serious stroking to step aside. We appreciate all you have done for America and the Republican Party. Going to follow in your footsteps etc…you are the greatest President of our lifetime and I’m going to proof it to the American people with your help. Meantime the opposition is going to encourage DeSantis to go head to head with him, because they want Trump to run.

Think about it DeSantis needs Trumps base to win. Needs Trumps endorsement without the name calling, stick to the issues and be reasonable. That’s will be a winning strategy for any candidate.

Yep. If you get dragged into the mud with Trump, he will knock you off. Best way to beat him is to ignore the nonsense and be disciplined.

Or you can call half the electorate a basket of deplorables...that worked real well for HRC.

What makes it even more interesting will be the fact that in a debate Trump will recognize Desantis's strategy of trying to diffuse him and will probably pile on the insults trying to get him to engage. The minute Desantis decides to engage he will lose. He will have to practice saying nothing with only a smile. Easier said than done with Trump in your face. Say what you want about Trump but he really does know how to negotiate. Flipping the table on Trump is the only way to win in a debate. By taking the high road Desantis will also gain the respect of independent voters which would get him elected in the general election. Most people (2/3) who support Trump love his policies but not his delivery will follow DeSantis happily, the other 1/3 hard right wing will follow Desantis by default.

That will be very difficult to do and a real conundrum for the repubs.

Couldn't RNC just ice Trump out, keeping him out of debate, and keeping their boy DeSantis clean?

I actually think DeSantis doesn't need Trump's endorsement, because where else are those votes going to go if they don't go to Trump. If I'm DeSantis, I would only acknowledge Trump's policies that you would continue to support. He can acknowledge the policies (even if he gives Trump a mention) and focus on his ability to lead the nation; something that the last three President's have failed to do.

You mean if the polls and Media all COLLUDE and RIG the primaries against Trump and he loses to Ron DeSANCTIMONIOUS?

The crazy Trump base will stick with Trump as a 3rd party candidate.

Trump is a problem for 2024.

I think that base covers a wide range of supporters and overall has shrunk dramatically. Rupert Murdoch has had enough...what platform is going to give him an audience? If DeSantis keeps on doing what he's doing, he will have the votes and the support of every other potential primary challenger. Trumps island is getting smaller as we speak.

So you're saying Trump has a ceiling?
I made that mistake once.
