No, they don’t. My bet is neither Trump or DeSantis is the nominee.
His popularity among republicans is essentially unchanged. This isn’t some
Recent spike in popularity. He has had the same hold on the Party for 7 years.

While still very early, and I'm hopeful it's not Trump, that one does seem to be the outlier.
He still has a strong hold over his base.

I consider myself conservative and like a lot of Trump's policies but not his immature ways. If my choices are Trump or Desantis in the primary, my vote without hesitation is going to be Desantis.

By the time we get to the primaries it will not even be close. DeSantis will be way out in front.

I think there are a fair amount of people who agree with you, it's just kind of surprising how many people would still choose Trump at this point.

I question that as well. That's why I think these polls don't matter yet. No one outside of Trump and Haley have announced and you are also dealing with name recognition. Also, how is the question asked in these polls. I haven't met one person who claimed to have voted for Trump (once or twice) that would vote for him again given some of the options that are out there for the nomination.

If Trump is nominee and then gets indicted chaos city. You always have to wonder about these never ending criminal investigations on both sides.Delaware attorney investigating Hunter for four years likewise Durham.Politics at its worst

Recent example -

"If the Republican presidential primary for the 2024 election was held today, who would you vote for? (GOP voters) "

Donald Trump 46%
Ron Desantis 23%
Mike Pence 7%
Nikki Haley 6%
Mike Pompeo 3%
Marco Rubio 2%
Ted Cruz 1%
Tim Scott 1%
Someone else 1%
Don't know / Unsure 9%

Desantis is fairly well known. Haley is getting a slight bump but hasn't really had an impressible rollout in my opinion. Just seems insane to me that 46% would pick Trump over Desantis today. I do know a few die hard Trump fans, two of them would vote for Trump as an independent over Desantis.

I just think he's either going to win, or going to be a problem unless he bows out gracefully and it's hard to imagine that happening. Maybe the best chance is if it's Haley?

Wouldn't most people want to know who the other candidate is? I would hope most voters want to take a look at the 2 candidates and evaluate them based on their plans, where our country is at in Nov 2024, and where we are headed. Then again you have people who are never Trump as well as others who are never Biden.

Hasn't Trump done enough to say no matter who is the other candidate is, you would vote for someone other than Trump. And thus this is what is wrong.

Trump winning the presidency is not good for America. I would put a Kamala or deBlasio presidency in the same category. So yes the other candidate matters.

I've seen nothing from DeSantis that suggests that he will do any better against Trump than Jeb Bush or John Kasich did in 2016.

Completely different playing field/political climate than 2016. Not even remotely comparable.

Idk, not really a fan of using the state to attack companies and people for their own political gain, if that person has the presidential power to go on these social issue vendettas nationally, that would be terrifying for free speech bc of the fear of retaliation by federal gov. I’m a fan of smaller government and less gov interference, i think the opposite would happen with desantimonius were elected.

Let's check in and see how Ron DeSantis is doing against Trump and the rest of the field:

Understand that view, but I think that’s taking certain of DeSantis actions to the extreme and assuming he’d act similarly as President, which is a much different landscape that governing a state. I’ve learned more about DeSantis the person and politician, and I take him over Trump or any other R nominee I’ve seen (and I won’t vote for Trump regardless). I don’t agree with everything, nor will I with any politician. On the big stuff, I like him more than anyone else who has emerged. And I’m not alone, because getting 60% in Florida, winning MIami-Dade, etc, tells me there are plenty of independents and Democrats who like him.

You seem to care about this a lot. Voting for Don? LOL. Thanks for checking in with another meaningless poll.

The primary is next winter/spring. Other candidates will enter and rise/fall in support. These things ebb and flow.

Anyone paying attention to polls right now are consumed by their personal echo chamber to make themselves feel good. Some people like noise though.

You (and others) have spent the majority of this thread saying Trump is done and it's only a matter of time before someone (e.g., DeSantis) overtakes him as the presumptive 2024 republican nominee for president. Well, who's it going to be, then? Because it sure doesn't look like it's going to be DeSantis, at this rate.

By the way, here's another "meaningless" poll. If they're all showing the same thing, when do they become meaningful?

Believe me, I'd love to never have to talk or think about Trump ever again, but it's impossible as long as he maintains his hold on the majority of conservative voters. And who's going to be able to do that? Ronald Reagan is not walking through that door.

Why are you obsessing about something that’s a year and a half away. We don’t even know who is running.

Really not uncommon for people on this board to talk about a topic like that. We did early in 2015 and 2019.

Hilary was leading every poll at this time in 2015, Biden was leading every poll at this time in 2019.

Trump leading in pretty much every poll in 2023 is not insignificant. Doesn't guarantee him the spot since he carries more baggage that anyone probably in history, though it is still a bit shocking that anyone with this much baggage can still hit 40% support.

That said, Desantis has been more likeable in his recent interviews. Laughing off the Trump criticisms etc.
He'll do well if he can keep that up and an indictment takes Trump out. I don't think he will do as well if he has to go head to head with Trump though.

They become meaningful when the votes actually start, which is at least 10 months away.

Sure, and there is plenty of other meaningless conversation here as well that we all participate in. This is is just another one of those topics. Some people think polling is interesting. No one is forcing anyone here to discuss it if they don't.

We were discussing who the nominee would be at this point in 2011, 2015, and 2019. Why is this any different?
Trump coming in with polls around 40% just shows that there is a lot for anyone else to overcome. Not impossible, but will be very difficult.

Cool…just keep debating the importance with yourself then.

You guys are right, Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy totally shook the political landscape when they announced they're running for the nomination.

And if you think the likes of Mike Pence, Mike Pompeo, Tim Scott, or Ron DeSantis are going to make waves when they inevitably announce, well, I just don't see it.

Who cares what "waves" they make when they announce? The only thing that matters are the state primary election results.
