Roy Moore

This is beyond politics. There have been politicians who have put aside party and did the right thing for the country from Alexander Hamilton to Barry Goldwater to the Republican Party in Louisiana that votes and came out against David Duke. We now have a President and the national party supporting this lunatic. There are a few republicans who have come out against Moore but far too few.
No, it is politics. That's all it is.

In such a deeply red state, Jones will struggle to win unless Republicans cross party lines and vote Democratic.

In this election, a non-vote or a vote for a third party candidate is a vote for Moore.
I never buy into that kind of logic. I vote my conscious...don't care if it helps another candidate.

what about Doug Jones is so horrible that you and SPK would not even pull the lever for him even though his opponent is a pedophile etc etc.

Nothing about him is so horrible except he has too many liberal, government dictated positions for me.

To be honest, I don't know much about all Doug Jones positions (although I do know he supports the ACA...which I am 100% against) and I don't live in Alabama, so not in tune to how that would match up to the candidates. Both major parties have shown very little leadership and quite frankly, not inclined to support candidates that are blind partisans.

So vote for a candidate, any candidate, no matter if you like them or not? Isn’t that how we get the Roy Moore’s of the world?

If you find it just politics, fine. I find Moore one of the most repugnant of all people on so many different issues. It is not politics.
I find Moore repugnant as I find others repugnant who have behaved the same. I don't need to repeat the names but they have "R's" and "D's" next to their names.

That is the dilemma though.

Clearly Moore is the repugnant of the 2 major candidates in Alabama. If you are not willing to vote against him by voting for Jones - Then why should the party try and get someone who isn't a horrendous person to run for office.

Applies to both sides obviously.

Really? There are other candidates that ran for office that behaved the same? Can't remember the last pedophile, racist, homophobe that ran for office. Moore broke new ground.

The speech his wife gave is priceless trying to defend against allegations racism, anti-women. She said the fake news has you believe that we are against Jews. Guess What? . . . . Our lawyer is a Jew.

You can't make up this stuff.

You call it a dilemma; I call it exercising my right to vote. I voted for Peter Rohrman and I slept fine that night. Maybe by supporting the failing two-party process you are getting what you deserve.

If that's how you soothe your conscious, that is ok with me.
Thanks...appreciate you understanding my position. (Don't worry about soothing anything, whatever that meant). IMO, you vote for a candidate that most closely ties to your ideology and priorities (in my case I heavily weight leadership). I can respect someone that votes to prevent another candidate, but that hasn't served us very well of late.

I agree you should always vote your conscience.

The fact remains in this case, a third party vote is a vote for Moore.

That’s no fact, just some illusion in your head. If you are an Alabaman republicant and would otherwise vote for the republicant candidate, isn’t voting for a 3rd party candidate or not voting at all actually helping Jones???

1.Trump carried Alabama with 62% of the vote.
2.Let's say there are 200 voters in Alabama. If Moore would normally get 62% of the vote he would win 124-76
3. Moore is not a typical candidate and people are conflicted about voting for him.
4.So let's say 1/3 of all voters who would normally vote Republican don't vote or vote for someone other than Jones. In that case, Moore would lose 41 votes but Jones would not gain any votes.
5. In that case, Moore still wins 83-76
6.If 20% of Republicans decided voting Democratic was better than Moore, Moore would lose 25 votes and Jones would gain 25 votes.
7. In that case Jones would win 101-99.

So Republicans not voting for Moore helps Jones, but voting for Jones is more efficient if you don't want Moore to win.

But I thought "The fact remains in this case, a third party vote is a vote for Moore." ????

Fair enough, in my opinion, it is unlikely 20 % of voting Republicans will cross party lines and vote for a Democrat.

In my opinion, it is unlikely 40% of voting Republicans will not vote nor vote for a third party candidate.

In my opinion, Republicans who are doing those things are passively protesting Moore, which is fine but doesn't impress me one way or the other. It soothes your conscience which is the important thing.

In my opinion, Moore is going to win. Ultimately my opinion will be put to the test and we will know for sure relatively soon.

You can't tell people how to vote and say by not voting or by voting third party that is a vote for X. People have the right to vote. Telling them not to vote a certain way is simply wrong and a third party candidate will never get elected if that is how people think or use that lame line to try and get folks to vote for A or B. It's wrong. Encourage people to vote and then live with the outcome. The two party system is currently failing our country and the more you repeat that BS spiel the worse it will get. That simply means you are doing what they want you to do.

We can forget about it now. Alabama does the right thing and Moore has lost. Good riddance.
It’s a win for everybody. Democrats get a seat from a red state. Republicans don’t have to deal with all the things that would go along with Moore in the Senate. I know vocally Trump supported him but I wonder how much he really supported him with ivanka making it known she was against Moore. Had Trump really supported him 100% there’s no way Ivanka would have voiced a negative opinion about Moore. I think everybody wins here

There is no forgetting. Republicans and Trump will still own it. They went to down into the sewer and they came out reeking. The stench remains.

It’s a big moment for dems. This is their Scott Brown.

Had Moore won, the narrative would have been all about Trump saving the day and the voters responding to Trump.

Had he just said “let the voters decide” the narrative would have just been that Moore was a bad candidate. Now it is a referendum on Trump and his policies.

Will republicans embrace or distance themselves from Trump heading into - midterm year?

I think Republicans need to look in the mirror instead of how they align or not with Trump. They have a majority and have accomplished very little. That has nothing to do with Trump. If they have losses during the mid terms they have nobody to blame but themselves.

One fellow said "best not to vote". I do not agree with that.

The other fellow is voting third party, not because he believes in what the third party stands for but because he is voting his conscious (I believe he means conscience). That's very noble but not very practical. He doesn't believe in the third party, he just wants to look cool.

If a person truly believes in the platform of a third party, I support their right to vote 100%.

In fact, it seems the country is ripe for a serious third party candidate. However, in my opinion that third party will spring up seemingly overnight. I don't believe it will be a party you have currently heard of.

If you were referring to me, your reading comprehension suffers. Try being direct sometimes rather than going the passive aggressive route. You might gain a little more respect.

They go hand in hand.

Conservatives and Trump ran on repealing the ACA but they never actually had a plan for what that would look like.

The tax bill does not poll well at all so it will be an interesting couple weeks.
If they don't get it through before the new year, it is likely to die as well... and if they do push it through it just gives dems more ammunition heading into the midterms - and while there will be different names on the ballot, Democrats will all be running against Trump because he is wildly unpopular and it is working.
